you want moderne street fonk n' hard rockin groove?  Check out Tortoise's Standards album from 2001........killa!!!
 
and i'm listening again to Ervind Aarset's truly excellent Sonic Codex.........more i listen less one hears of 'jazz rock' per se but instrumental rock informed by jazz, electronica, film music etc....i.e. very in da vein of Tortoise!!! brillo!!!

An excellent album, with Theo Travis in fine form on alto and tenor saxes and flute , plus some electric wind instruments. For the most part we are give drums, Hammond and guitar backing Theo - a excellent combination of sounds. Here we are treated to jazzrockblues and prog jazz  (including a quirky take on See Emily Play - the only non-original tune on the album, which doesn't IMHO work as well as Travis's take on 21st Century Schizoid Man on Earth To Ether). Robert Fripp appears on a couple of tracks, moving the music into ambient jazz fusion - Travis has done something similar for a whole album before, with bass maetro Steve Lawson

Not a particularly a  new sub-genre but of minor interest. That Steve Lawson/Theo Travis album mentioned is one of the most obvious recent examples. However, have to say the form dates back to at least the 60's and some of then so-called psychedelic jazz, e.g.  improv jazz flute being played in the Taj Mahal - the musician's name escapes me at the moment, might it be Tim Weisberg????.

I just picked up Miles Davis' The Complete On The Corner Sessions.  The majority of the songs on here originally appeared on On The Corner, Big Fun, and Get Up With It, but this is the first time many have been released in their original form.  Recorded in the early 70's, this still sounds current.  Only down side is that my wallet is considerably lighter!  People (including Miles fans) either love this or hate it.  Count me in the former camp.

Larry Young: Lawrence of Newark - first solo album I've heard by Larry Young. Apparently improv but all very agreeable innovative Hammond - in the territory of Santana's Welcome (which of course had Larry Young guesting)

I just ordered Double Talk from the website as well as the Cipher project which is like dark electronic fusion or somethin dunno it just read good!!!  i got that over the duo work 'cause there was percussion in it but i'll def check that one out later........
