I'm not entirely sure but I think he wrote the lyrics and Geddy and Alex wrote the music separate from eachother. I don't know which came first. They had some sort of system but I forget the details. Catcher can probably give you a better answer.

Usually Neil's lyrics were done, and Geddy & Al wrote the music around them. In the Signals tourbook, the gist of "Subdivisions" (chords and bridges) was put together, and they took the tape over to Neil (who was washing his car in his driveway at the time) to play for him on a small player. Neil liked the role the synth line took. The drums went on last in the studio, IIRC. "Chemistry" is a song with lyrical contributions by all three. The song came about during a soundcheck on the Moving Pictures tour. One pre-show jam sounded more interesting to them than the others, and they each developed and refined their respective parts till they had something close to the final version. After the tour, they finished and recorded it. |

For the most part I think lyrics were written first, at least very rough drafts. Music followed by Geddy and Alex and in some rare cases music by Geddy and Neil, maybe just laying down a simple groove. Lyrics were edited based on how Geddy felt about them, he has said many times for him to sing about it he needed to feel it. It seems Neil was very open to adjusting his lyrics to suit Geddy singing them. Based on all his reading, Neil it seems wrote lyrics whenever......all of the instrumentals they recorded may have been when Neil was having writers cramp. . Several documentaries detail the writing process, I think they are very open to discussing it. The one that comes to mind is the documentary on Snakes & Arrows recording session......The best thing was that they worked on the album together in the studio, unlike what happens now. Here is the teaser, it's a great watch to understand the intensity of this record. Edited by Catcher10 - February 11 2022 at 11:55 |

Pre-ordered already......I'm not a CD guy but I did the big box set due to all the stuff you get. Just the hardback book is probably worth $50, the records are worth $100 so it made sense to me. Most of these deluxe type box sets don't make a lot of sense to me......but hey, it's Rush!!

The standard 3CD box will suffice for me. 300 bucks is nuts. You guys can have the enamel pins, metal picks and replica tickets.

Dude!!! You get a Red Barchetta in the deluxe set....WTH man, that itself is worth the price of admission . Like I said, I'm not one of these deluxe box set buyers. The last one I was thinking of was Prince~Sign O the Times, that one was $300 and came with like 11 records but nothing more really. I did not get it.......Look at the Beatles whackos who spend $500 on those box sets that have been reissued like 100x already. There are some of these box sets that will never be in print again....but again this is Rush.

^^ that red Barchetta is really quite diminutive; you can just make it out in the picture...

Thanks I'd forgotten about this film. The compositions seem to emerge from a sort of slow-simmering soup they each contribute to until something worthy starts to show itself. Very interesting. |

It IS a really nice boxset, but I bought the big Thin Lizzy box, the Triumph Allied Forces box, and the two big recent Tangerine Dream boxsets, and while they didn't come with such extravagances, they also cost a lot less. I need to cool it.

I still have my copy.....plays fine. I love Geddy's bass sound on this section, you can hear the Chris Squire influence easily.

I wish I still had the stuff I dumped during my big tape purge in the '90s. In hindsight, that was an oops!

I never dumped anything, regardless of media. Back in the early 90s I was focused on raising a family so all music took a back seat, except Rush concerts. I didn't buy much music, CD or LP, but everything sat in boxes. I never really knew about going to a record store and trading or selling my stuff.....I'm so glad I didn't do that!! I have all my records that I bought as a kid and teen, some although were lost in a couple house moves but I have replaced almost all of them.
