You either get into the mood for "Toni Erdmann" and then it's a great movie, or you don't and then it sucks. I got into the mood. I loved it because it was totally different. I am absolutely certain I won't get into the mood for the remake with Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig. It will be a total disaster. All the quirkiness of the movie will be gone, and it will instead be a horrible American mainstream comedy.

I just want to make a few more comments about "Toni Erdmann". This movie divides the viewers: Some consider it to be horrible and
boring, others consider it to be absolutely brilliant. I definitely
belong to the latter faction.
I won't go into the story, I just want to talk about a few aspects. I read reviews (on Amazon and IMDB) that stated some scenes were too long and should have been cut ten seconds earlier. Most directors would certainly have done that - the dialogue is over, cut! But Maren Ade deliberately lets the camera run on to catch the awkward silences afterwards. Here is where the actors can really shine, with just a twitch of the lips, a downcast look or the likes. This makes all the awkward situations feel even more awkward. Some reviewers also found the movie to be overly long and the pace too slow. I on the other hand would not cut a single second out, and I love slow-paced movies. Some people also commented they didn't like the end, that there was no real "conclusion". Again this is a thing that I loved about the movie. In real life there is no such thing as "conclusion" except for death, so unless a film ends with the death of the central character all these movie conclusions are fake. "And they lived happily ever after" is nothing but a sugary Hollywood cliche. The two main actors were absolutely brilliant and believable. And some scenes were utterly hilarious. But again this was not the typical Hollywood humor, so if people expected this from the movie they certainly were disappointed. I love it when directors (and writers, musicians, painters and the likes) have their own distinctive style. You need balls to have it, but for someone who has an independent mind this is exactly what he or she wants. Who the hell needs the ten-thousandth copy of some Hollywood blockbuster or some number one charts hit? Maren Ade is a woman, but she definitely has balls! |

Happy Death Day (2017) and Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
The first one was rather entertaining, the second one less so. Absolutely non-original in all manner of creativity standarts, but I didn't regret watching them. I would recommend ARQ (2016) instead, though. This was like a downgraded The Butterfly Effect with loads of fluff. What I appreciate most about such films is that they make the youth take some issues less seriously. Hollywood is good at that. Though, one must learn to appreciate real cinema before it's too late. Such movies can never be the main meal, but stuff for snacking. The first movie: Quality: 6/10 - Entertainment value: 8/10 = Overall: 7/10 The sequel: Quality: 5/10 - Entertainment value: 7/10 = Overall: 6/10 Edited by Shadowyzard - March 01 2021 at 16:52 |

Hi,
In the past month, including things I had not seen before! Cul de Sac (Polanski) Touch of Evil (Welles) --- and I am having a heck of a hard time writing a review because the film is gound breaking!) If (Anderson) Mathilde (Uchitel) Kin ( Baker and Baker) Padmaavat (Bhansali) Paris by Night (Hare) Priceless (Salvadori) Rock My World (Furie) Silence (Makhmalbaf) The Girl King (Kaurismaki) Yousseu N'Dour: Return to Goree (Borgeaud) I'm working on some of these reviews right now and likely have to see a couple of these again! |

^ I'll be interested to read your review of If.... Have you seen O Lucky Man! which is part of a loose Mick Travis trilogy along with Britannia Hospital? If.... is the most lauded of those three, but O Lucky Man! has been the one that I have most returned to.
I watched an Italian film most recently on Netflix called The Ruthless (Lo spietato) (2019). It may not be very original, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just saw it by accident way down a list and watched it without even reading the description. It's generally not a well-rated film, and is of the crime-drama with black comedy elements variety. The lead character played by Riccardo Scamarcio pulled me into it. It's kind of Donnie Brasco. It felt fresher and less cliched to me perhaps because I don't regularly watch a lot of these kinds of films. I don't watch a lot of films these days (seem to lack the attention span). There are a couple of TV shows that I'm following. Edited by Logan - March 01 2021 at 20:54 |

Hi, I saw it a long time ago, and look to catch it again. At the time I did not think it was that great a film ... but I have to see it again to evaluate it better.

If I saw it today and hadn't liked it before, I doubt that I'd enjoy it nearly as much. It would partially depend on your particular sense of humour. I think it helped that I was a teenager, it came up on TV, I had no expectations when it came on -- TV was just on -- and was different enough from the usual fare to interest me, and I was a massive admirer of the film version of A Clockwork Orange and Malcolm McDowell. Plus I was quite an Anglophile at the time when it came to my favourite viewing and most anything absurdist/ eccentric and with a dark comedy angle tickled my fancy. I caught quite a few things on TV that I loved back then that were very off-beat (such as Tampopo). I still have cable, but it seems I so rarely catch any movies I like on |regular" tv -- it's streaming services. It actually would be over twenty years since I last saw it, actually, but its one of those films which has really stuck in my mind to the point that I can "watch" and "listen" to scenes from it in my head with real clarity. I still love absurdist dark comedy films with some kind of message, which is why, say, I loved The Lobster. It would be some years after O Lucky Man! that I really got very deeply into film, which came out of discovering much, much more non-English language art house films was lucky to have very good libraries and video stories as well as cinemas that played international fare which weren't far to travel to. Anyway, while not a sequel, it it an interesting sort of companion piece to If.... Britannia Hospital I didn't much enjoy. I saw If.... and Britannia Hospital after seeing O Lucky Man! |

Just to bring down the intellectual level and pursuit of high culture (as I always do )
Venom 7/10 Marvel nonsense but quite a lot of fun and played engagingly well by Tom Hardy. Wouldn't mind a second one but guess its probably not on the horizon. Johnny English Strikes Again 5/10 as good as Rowan Atkinson is (and he is) , this was very thin on decent jokes. But for the extremely gorgeous ex Bond girl Olga Kurylenko being in it , I would not have bothered really.

Truth or Dare (2018) - Pretty terrible. I've seen much better, much much better similar movies. 3/10
Escape Room /2019) - Despite being unoriginal, a decent watch. 6/10 Nowadays I'm taking my intellectual doses from Twitter and watching such movies for mental balance. Haha! Edited by Shadowyzard - March 06 2021 at 05:32 |

Ready or Not (2019) - Comedy/horror? No! Ridiculously mediocre fluff-fest. 5/10
The Ghost Writer (2010) - Classy. Like how a feather moves. A light-hearted take on a serious concept. Good dialogues, very good utilization of music. Elegantly done film. 8/10 Edited by Shadowyzard - March 06 2021 at 14:13 |

Durante la tormenta (2018) - Another Spanish delight. Yet, this type of movies are getting less exciting in my watching order, maybe it was just a coincidence. La cara oculta was a 8.5/10 movie, Contratiempo was 8/10, and this was 7/10.
Halloween (2018) - If I hadn't known the "Halloween" tradition, I might have seen it as mediocre or perhaps even crappy. But, it is a classy and decent enough sequel. If one watches it like having a nightmare, it might make better sense. Seeing our Turkish actor Haluk Bilginer was a surprise! 7/10 Edited by Shadowyzard - March 12 2021 at 18:24 |

Fire in the Sky (1993) - Not bad. 6/10
Strange Days (1995) - Oh boy, this was INTENSE! I'm glad that I first watched it at my age, rather than in the 90s. I really appreciated the undertones of the movie and underminings for a better American culture. A genuine effort for that, I daresay. I can even say that, "more than a movie". 9/10 The Visit (2015) - An average movie, with an awesome major plot twist and a bad ending. 6.5/10 |

Bad Boys for Life (2020) - excellent movie with Will Smith, a few times in the movie they completely surprised me, there were things I didn't expect. Not predictable at all.
Tenet (2020) - good, but some reviews say it's average, IMHO acting is okay, though, and visuals are great. But if you are looking for sense, it is not the case. Bloodshot (2020) - great superhero film. Vin Diesel. Do you like him? Then watch it! ---- These 3 I liked a lot

Il Bidone - 6/10 A Lion Is In The Streets - 5/10 Take a Giant Step - 5/10 The Visitors - 8/10 Ditte, Child of Man - 7/10 I've seen worse, but I won't advertise those... I need more unique (but good) movies. I'm running out of stuff that turns me on.

Deja Vu (2006) - Deja vu, indeed. I was once more bitterly reminded that I had better think twice before watching a movie starring Denzel Washington. The guy is a fake!.. The movie was also swimming in the sea of mediocrity. 4/10
Don't Look Now (1973) - A very good UK/Italy made film. Gotta love the 70s' cinema! Venice! 8/10 Edited by Shadowyzard - March 18 2021 at 15:42 |

Sputnik (2020)
Set in the early eighties, a cosmonaut comes back from outer space with something nasty inside him. I expected this to be a remake of the classic British Sci-Fi film The Quatermass Experiment, but it wasn't. Very enjoyable and not too generic or CGI heavy sci-fi film that relies on characterisation and a well thought out plot. 8/10

El cuerpo (2012) - I really liked this kind of "twisted" plots in Spanish crime movies, and this one was also good. Quite similar to Contratiempo. 7.5/10
Fracture (2007) - Lots of actors already known by me. Anthony Hopkins is great as usual. I initially liked the music utilization, but it gets too dominant over time. Not sure if I'd call the movie great, but it was a pleasuresome watch. 7.5/10 |

The Professor (2018) - Nice little drama with a heavy subject. It works because it doesn't try to be larger than life and has excellent actors.
Joe Kidd (1972) - A childhood favourite that makes a lot less impact after 30 years. American-made spaghetti western perhaps?

Justice League The Snyder Cut I'm still only a mild DC fan, and the Whedon cut was a let down to be sure. The Snyder cut certainly takes on a very different tone. It's a long haul at 4 hrs (I watched it over two nights). The best part was that he completely redid the sound track and I think that alone was a huge improvement. Definitely a darker vision. He spent much more time on character development and back story which helped a bit and dumped enough of the mundane dialogue to pull it away from the silly Saturday morning cartoon feel. It won't be on my heavy rotation list but it was nice to see the real version as envisioned by the director. Whedon cut = 4/10 Snyder Cut = 7/10
