So, 'Tory Girl' has spoken, I see...
scratch the surface but a little way...
although, on reflection, she has nothing to worry about, as her mother's favourite morning read, the daily Torygraph has charged to her aid on its trusty 'white' steed...

To be fair........... I heard her agent on R2 yesterday, and apparently she said that someone's hair reminded her of the golliwog. I played with golly dolls when I was a kid, and to be honest I find it extremely sad that something that is entirely innocent ( a child's doll) is something most people feel as if they have to keep hidden in their lives, it's worse than admitting you wet the bed! I once had a friend who spoke just like proffessor Yaffle from bagpuss, no one was ashamed of remembering that. It was NOT meant to be offensive,it was spoken with no ignorance, malice or hurtful intent... the truth is the person she refered to DOES have a floppy affro and she was referring to the HAIR, not calling HIM a name, she was instantly sacked!!! Blinkin over protective nanny state, it's like communism, soon our thoughts will be monitored. SHE MEANT NO ILL. I bet there are hundreds of BBC workers who think BAD things, but speak within the party line. Well, I'd prefer honesty over hypocrysy any day of the week. I see/hear things on the BBC so much more offensive than that on a daily basis. Sometimes getting hurt is how we grow. This is not ingrained, ignorant, dyed in the wool racism, it's just normal human thought. Sorry Jared.

I agree Jim, just the mention of the T word gives us all the willies! I spent a happy hour today, along with my neighbours digging the blinkin UPS man out of the snow.... after calling to say they would not collect today he came anyway, missed my drive and backed into the neighbours ditch.......... I wanted to shoot him! there is going to be one hell of a mess once all the lovely white stuff disapears. I would have been so much better if he'd not laughed the entire time....................

Oh dear... +++giggle+++
personally, I've spent a fairly lonely day here, as there was a couple more inches of snow today, meaning all schools were closed & only two of us bothered to turn up for work (the words workshy, lazy and gits spring to mind)

I tend to agree, Rach - it's just that name... Thatcher +++shudder+++ quite enough to give her the benefit of the guilt |
I tend to agree as well. If she'd referred to this tennis player in a derogatory manner as a golliwog it would have been different, but it appears that she was making a light hearted comment about the similarity of the hair. Even if she was being racist it seems typical of people these days to go blabbing to the press (probably to further their own interests).
By the way; I feel that the bad press the Thatcher name gets is pretty much old hat and not wholly deserved. There is a school of thought that many of the unpopular things that Mrs T did during her leadership dug the country out of the hole that the other lot got us into in the seventies and left the country in a much better state in the nineties; so that Blair and Brown could enjoy 10 years good times before sinking it once again. Hmm, people striking over jobs, talk of a depression, power workers out on strike, perhaps we'll have the three day week back soon. Got any candles?
Oops, politics in the shed; padon me I'll just get back to listening to Genesis.

the whole "golliwog" thing is no surprise coming from the Thatchers - they've never liked black people and have always done all they could to get rid of them ....

It's funny you should say that, although there always plenty of candles in the house, I found myself picking up a box of proper household candles when someone gave me a lift to the supermarket this afternoon............ It's a very 70's thing isn't it? maybe like the 70's we'll get ourselves a decent summer at last to go with whats turning into a proper winter for a change! Ah! the good old days

Hi, thanks for the greetings, everyone.
Seems there were a couple of things that deserved answers and I don't know how to multiquotes yet...
To answer Fred: Can I cook? Yes. I take after my mom that very annoying habit of buying recipe magazine and cutting through it to organize them in binders. The only problem, is that I tend to adapt everything. I guess I cook pork loins, soups, and chicken best. Pretty basis stuff, I suppose.
And I promise I won't mention Dream Theatre...
And since Jim these things were needed to be welcomed here: large quantities of:

Gloegg is actually Glögg. Scandinavian stuff made for cold and dark winter nights.
It's a lot like glüwein or vin chaud.
