loudness wars and DT.

don't know if you guys care about how sh*tty cds are mastered these days.  seems dream theater fans are unhappy with the last two discs.  below is a link to BCaSL remixed using the song stems that were available on their website.  the sound difference is pretty amazing.  i'm concerned about the new FK and Rush just being brickwalled.

Just Listened to - Fand - (The Enid), then decided to listen the "The Count of Tuscany" - The start is AWESOME, sort of ultra RUSH with fantastic drumming and riffing - an excellent long track only bettered IMHO by Six Degrees and my all time fave - In the presence of enemies both parts.....
Anyway, I reckon I must listen to "Unfold the Future" more than I have in the past - this is possibly my least spun flokis after "The rainmaker".....
Ho-hum.....

Just finished up Retropolis. While it's a great album, I feel it's not as good as the albums preceding it and following it. I don't feel much of a connection to it as I do just about any other TFK album. The end of the album is one of the most glorious moments in their discography, however.
I'm sure my opinion will change in time, as it always does with Flower Kings and other related bands; but right now, I put Retropolis in my bottom 2 along with The Rainmaker...

Nice idea Tom, I'll have a go at this Tongue

The Flower King - 2
Back in the World - 3
Retropolis - 2
Stardust We Are - 4
Flower Power - 5
Space Revolver - 4
The Rainmaker - 0
Unfold the Future - 1
Adam and Eve - 2
Paradox Hotel - 2
Sum of No Evil - 0

In truth, this was pretty tough.  I didn't really want to leave any album without a point but this gives a better reflection of the overall view.

Rob, slugs in you ale, what's that all about?  Either they can drill through cans or you're drinking too slowly Wink.

Also, I have now booked for TFK's gig at Leamington Spa this sept.  If anybody else is going (Nov, that's not too far from you is it?) we'll have to have a beer.

Absolutely not.

In my opinion, The Flower Kings are far more musically advanced and adventurous than any of those neo prog bands.

I mean, I quite like some of them (Marillion, IQ, etc) and have seen quite a few of them but because The Flower Kings are better musicians, their sound is more organic and natural. It's like they were born to play this stuff (like the 70s classic bands) rather than having to force it. Because they are so good, it sounds easy and, like I say, natural.

They are also far more adventurous than any of those bands. There's stuff on albums such as Unfold The Future that none of those bands would be able to play let alone contemplate. The same goes for the earlier albums as well.

Wink

Yeah thanks to you and the others

Will check out Unfold Future, Space revolver, and new one soon.

Cheers!

i wish there was a list of their best songs - maybe the top 5 and we newcomers to the band could listen to those.

Is Unfold the Future their best album?

I only have Retropolis, and Adam and Eve, and Sum of No Evil

Unfold the Future is great, but I wouldn't call it their best.  I'd say their best ones are Paradox Hotel, Flower Power, Space Revolver and Stardust We Are, but the great thing about this band is that almost all of their albums are so strong, that each one is someone's favorite.  You really cannot go wrong with any of them, although I always tell people to save The Rainmaker and Adam and Eve (which I see you already have) until you have all or most of the others.

I didnt mind Adam and Eve as a concept album. the lyrics are terrific, but its not as good as Retropolis in many ways. I am intrigued with Space Revolver's concepts. Paradox Hotel is interesting too by the looks. So much to look forward to.

I know many of you have been following my survivors for Yes and Dream Theater, and others who are doing Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, etc.

Would you guys be up for a Flower Kings Survivor? Or at least a Transatlantic one?

What's with the lack of love for The Sum of No Evil? I see many of you guys have given no points to that album; I think it's a top 3 TFK album.

^now that's a good idea!

Just from the top of my head:

1. I Am the Sun (TFK)
2. All of the Above (Transatlantic)
3. Truth Will Set You Free (TFK)
4. Love Supreme (TFK)
5. A Gap in the Night (Tangent)
6. Send a Message from teh Heart (Kamakanic)
7. The Light (SB)
8. In Earnest (Tangent)
9. A Change of Seasons (DT)

Mind you, I haven't listened to most of these in a long, long time, so the list may not be really accurate of my actual taste.
