Being someone who's had last.fm for a really long time, my top artists are mostly based in longevity. Bands that I loved 2 years ago and still do are the ones at the top, followed by some that I haven't listened to as much recently but used to go all out with.

Can't believe I have Supertramp and Boston in my library... |
Ah, that's definitely why then. Opeth are really good, but I'm not sure if you would like them. If you want to hear their best non-metal song, try looking up "Harvest" on Youtube. That's a really good song. If you find that intriguing and want to take the next step after that, go with "Hex Omega". Boston's debut is great, and I love Supertramp.

I've had it for over 3 years now, so mine is quite based on that as well. Artists like Henry Cow and their opposites are the only exceptions, where I love them so much that they rose so quickly to my top even though I haven't owned them as long as say, Yes. Marillion are still decently high in my charts, even though I hardly listen to them anymore outside Fish's material, because I used to love nearly all of their stuff for about a year before. As my tastes have developed though, Hogarth era has gradually waned on me. I might try it again one of these days.

They might very well ALL me in my library... I got like 2500. |
Nearly everything (pretty much everything--it's hard to think of exceptions) in my library is stuff I actually own, and I'm generally a completionist.
There are still some artists I have in my collection that I haven't played yet either, I'll have to do that soon. No way am I acquiring any new music for a while.
|
I'm the exact opposite. I own a lot (can't believe I'm gonna have to move my cds again!), but I've basically have attention deficit... I'm a musical butterfly. There's only Queen that I can safely say I have everything they ever did. |
I have no idea how many artists I own every CD by. Even in cases of artists I don't like as much like VDGG and Camel, I still own their entire discography (or almost all of it).
Often an artist will not reach my top ranks unless I love most or all of their work. Pink Floyd, for example, has one REALLY good album (Animals), and while I own all of them and at least like most of them, they're nowhere to be seen even near my top 50.
|
There's so many albums I wanna own, I wouldn't buy the bad ones even if I like the artists (although these days actually paying for an album seems overratted by some people)... I usually try to listen to every track before buying it, this way I'm sure I'm going to like it.
The only exception to that being Hot Space, but Queen doesn't count because one day I WILL have Brian May... ![Wink Wink](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

Yeah, usually before I get something I'm extremely sure I'll at least have a chance of liking it. Camel and VDGG are near the only artists in my collection I hardly like at all anymore, whereas ones like Can and LTE I can take in small doses when I'm in the mood. Though if I'm not sure whether I'm going to like it or not, I'll make sure I hear it before acquiring it.

Who, Opeth? No, those are both original songs.

I haven't listened to much Rush, Pink Floyd, or The Beatles this past year and they're still in my top 20. However, there are some in my top 20 for the year that aren't even in my top 50 all-time such as Boards of Canada, Man Man, The Kinks, and most importantly, Chamillionaire.

That happens to me too. Tastes tend to go in interesting cycles though, so I suppose technically the longer you have them the more accurate they are, even if you're really into an artist currently that's not on the top list.

What are Opeth exactly anyway?
I don't mind the odd Northern European Folk Metal type thing, are they anything like that?
Harvest sound pretty generic so far...

Opeth's lead singer is the actor who does the voice for cookie monster on Sesame Street.

I'm not a metal expert; I don't know how I would classify them other than Progressive Death Metal. If you're ready to take a plunge, just go with "The Lotus Eater" then. That's my favorite song of theirs. Some other good starters are "The Drapery Falls" and "Ghost of Perdition". Only reason I recommended "Harvest" was because it didn't have the death vocals.

Beret metal. As in, metal for people who wear berets.

I definitely won't. The original version is good enough for me.

All right... I'll try a few more tracks, but I'm not falling head over heels for Opeth so far.
