The connection between Frisian and Danish is also something I've picked up on. In my teen years I travelled to Holland to play tennis tournaments. I stayed with a local family who spoke Frisian amongst themselves, and I was very surprised to find so many words and sentences that sounded Danish. I think they were too.
Oh and Danish is a strange lingo - you got that right.....though not as weird as Nynorsk!! The one language I don't understand in Scandinavia (Finnish doesn't count).

To be honest, I have almost no knowledge of Scandinavian languages, but Norwegian and Danish look to me more related than Swedish, just by the way it is written. True. The Dutch that is written in the Netherlands and the Dutch that is written in Belgium are officially the same. Maybe some other words are chosen (synonyms, and some words that are being used more often in either country), but essentially they are the same. Frisian (Frysk) is an official language, so that is a different thing. | Jullie zeggen 'schoon' in plaats van 'mooi' en 'amai' aan het begin van iedere zin | Ja, dat doen de Belgen. That's interesting. I've been trying to determine the origins of the surname Ewe in my family tree. They are believed to have come from Westphalia before immigrating to the U.S. in 1843 and the branch that leads to me has been known to use an apostrophe in the name: E'we. A German surname dictionary at my library says the name is of Frisian origin. I've had thoughts before that it might be Dutch or French (there were a number of "Earls of Ewe" in Normandy), but research results have been inconclusive thus far.
