For 2009 my greatest discovery was through PA, but not a band that's on PA, if you see what I mean.
On the IDM Appreciation Thread I was recommended a band by the name of Boards Of Canada and just a few months later I have their whole discography. The saying "X band changed my life" is an oft-used phrase and probably over-used and sometimes not even true, but for me with Boards Of Canada they genuinely did.
Boards Of Canada are simply outstanding, truly progressive electronic music of the very highest calibre.

Well technically, I think they are ambient techno, but that doesn't stop them from being awesome.

My biggest discovery of 2009 was easily Phideaux. I don't think I've had a single band so dominate my musical universe since I first became a fan of Led Zeppelin. Chupacabras, Number 7 and Doomsday Afternoon are exquisite albums.

My avatar is the vocalist of glam rock/brit pop band Suede (aka the London Suede in USA). They were once good before the guitarist left the band. Albums to hear: self titled debut and 'Dog Man Star.'

Couldn't agree more. A wonderful discovery of mine was Isis, I'm a huge fan of them now. They're so great and has even started opening me up to the Post genre. Er, that was last year. Well, I've listened to a bit of Magma and can say that I have enjoyed an entire albums of theirs. The 'Zeuhl' genre looks like something I may be diving into in the future.

Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Maudlin of The Well are my biggest revelations this year. And I can assure this was a huge year in music for me.

1-Leap Day. They are fantastic. Thank you Symphomania. 2-Seeing Muse live was a revelation. I had never heard them at real volume before- only from my daughter's crappy computer speakers. Now I get it. Matt Bellamy is amazing.

Greek heavy/black metal band Rotting Christ. Opened for Bolt Thrower last week in Paris, they were amazing. (But I am not sure if we should post only "prog" discovery in this thread or if other genres are allowed [we are in prog music lounge]).
In prog realm, I don't know there weren't that many bands that amazed me. Some bands that I dscovered recently and that i listened to more than twice : prog metal band Mechanical Poet, stoner prog band Titan and space rock band Ship Of Fools.

yes, 'kimono my house' is a masterpiece.
Russell Mael (together with Valensia) is one of the rare vocalists who can easily compete with Freddie Mercury in terms of vocal range.

Dude, If you like Al D. go and find Return To Forever, some fine jazz/fusion stuff that he was involved in before he went "solo". That band includes one Stanley Clark, as well as Chic Corea, and Lenny White. I was fortunate enough to see R.T.F. and all the members on solo ventures. Such incredible talents and awesome musicianship that anyone who appreciates prog would be definately entertained by, if you cross the lines into "fusion".
