DEUS EX MACHINA — De Republica
Review by infandous (Mike G.)

5%20stars Having not heard Area before this band, this album seemed like nothing I'd ever heard before. And in many ways it is quite unique. But I should point out that if you don't like Area, you won't like this band for sure. Not that these guys are some sort of copy or tribute, only that the influence is very apparent and sometimes quite strong, especially in the vocal department.

Having said that, this is quite an achievement and must have taken some serious work to create. The compositions are quite complex, varied, and intense for the most part.

The first track is strong statement of intent, starting fairly mellow with laid back vocals (for Piras anyway) and acoustic guitar. When the band finally bursts in, it is with odd time signatures, funky guitar and bass lines, and intense technical drumming. But this band has a soul, make no mistake about that. The vocals are some of the best I've ever heard. Piras is, without doubt, an acquired taste. My guess is that you love his vocals or hate, there is probably no middle ground. He uses his voice as another instrument (again, very much like Stratos did in Area) and boy does he have range. On top of that, all the lyrics are in Latin, which turns out to be quite beautiful to the ear (assuming you can enjoy his voice).

It would be almost pointless to describe each song in detail, as they all more or less fit the description of the first song I already wrote above. However, I will touch on a couple of the more interesting ones. Res Publica II features some very Gentle Giant like rhythm patterns with violin, while Res Publica III has some fantastic vocals and an interesting, almost jam like middle section. Foederis Aequas Dicamus Leges is the most fusion like song, with some blistering unison runs and more intense vocalizing. Aeterna Lex is a vocal experiment that can be a bit grating, but it quite short. Perpetua Lux I is a nice acoustic and violin piece, while Perpetua Lux II could almost be an 80's rock anthem (aside from the Latin lyrics) for it's first half, before it goes into a crazy fusion type lead guitar section before returning to the more straightforward beginning part to end the song. Speaking of the guitar, the guitarist has a unique and interesting style and seems to be one of the driving forces for this band, along with singer Piras. The rhythm section is outstanding, particularly the drummer who is one of the best drummers I've ever heard. The keyboardist does a fine job, with some great solos and very well done accompaniments

The only songs that don't quite do it for me are Aeterna Lex and the final song, but these are not bad by any means. Maybe just a bit too much even from this band. I hesitated with the rating, because with two songs that I find less than perfect, perhaps 5 stars is pushing it? But I can't help but feel that this is this bands masterpiece and that this is unique album in the prog world (despite the obvious Area influence, Area never did anything like this). So I'm going to go ahead with a 5 star rating, but it's probably more like 4.5. Either way, I consider this essential.

DEUS EX MACHINA — Deus Ex Machina
Review by infandous (Mike G.)

3%20stars I mostly agree with the inimitable Mr. Chantraine's review of this album, but would like to add my own spin as well.

Definitely the first few tracks are the best, with the first track and Hostis standing out. M.A. is also a nice acoustic and violin number. Past Hostis things start to get a bit heavy going, not because the music is overly complex (though it is quite complex), but because it starts to seem a bit too homogeneous. This would not be an issue on the next album, but here I find my attention wavering after the first few songs. Still, the title track (also the namesake song of the band) is quite good and seems to be a bit of a showcase for their then new drummer near the end of the song. The final track is kind of cool, but a bit too odd and repetitive. Maybe not the best way to end the album.

This album suffers from the same lack of volume as the previous one (at least my copy does), only now it is even quieter than before! I find that I can turn my volume up to the maximum setting and it is not even all that loud (most CD's I can't turn up this high or they are way too loud). The overall mix is better though, and the instruments all sound good (not distortions like on the previous album). This one sounds like a studio album at least, with half decent production values (other than the volume issue of course).

Piras is a bit less shrill here, perhaps due to the improved recording quality. There are still some harsh moments, but in general I love his singing on here. It would really be the next album, however, until he reaches a kind of perfection (for me) with his vocalizations.

All in all, not a bad album, but not really for anyone other than fans of the other albums. I'd still recommend starting with the next album, De Republica, as that is their masterpiece in my mind. But not a bad album, and a solid 3 stars.

Slim pickings today. Raff promised me a trip to Firenze when we get back..she said there is a great RPI store there.

SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Symphonic Prog Expert

3%20stars Today I noticed that my amount of Italian Symphonic Prog reviews is 99 so I started to work on # 100, it's the only category I can easily compete with neighbour 'Super-Sean'! I have chosen for Contrapunto, this means that an Italian band on a Brasilian label is reviewed by a Dutchman on a Canadian progrock site, music unites! Contrapunto is from the city Turin, known because of their legendary football club Juventus. The nine compositions on their first album (1999) contain a fresh and modern sound with lots of captivating breaks. All musicians present themselves in a very pleasant and crafted way: good female English vocals (with hints from Tracey Hitchings), a guitarist who plays very alternating (from sensitive soli to heavy riffs), a keyboardist with a lush sound and flashy runs and a tight rhythm-section. Some tracks evoke Collins-era Genesis but in general Contrappunto makes quite original prog that grows every turn. The final song Bad Choice is a funny one with disco-like rhythm guitar and a jazzy piano. A promising debut CD.

funny damn thing...   was looking through the italianprog website.. for probably the thousandth time and never noticed this link.

http://www.prog70.com/

funny how he had the Hero album listed so highly....I remember adding them for sake of completeness but though the album grew on me (didn't think much of it on first listens) I still don't think it was 'all that'.  Anyone have that album...and like it?... love it?

June, 2007 29th... Baroque Day!!! "Concerto Grosso, The Seven Season" is in shop!!! And immediately I bought a copy!!! Boys... I don't know you... but that to say? It believed to have listened to all... above all for how much pertains the album "group and Orchestra" but... sh*t!!! A new standard is here!!! Franz Di Cioccio decides that "Stati Di Immaginazione" was an album... Already, like a lot... And appearance that put the hands on an album of Le Orme... Because this is the real sentence. Baroque Symphonic Prog Metal in the song more Rock and Baroque/ Symphonic Prog in the song with orchestra... Ok, this is the formula of "Concerto Grosso Per I New rolls"... And Believe me... "Concerto Grosso, The Seven Seasons" is 1.000.000 times better. Not only for record, because "Concerto Grosso Per I New Trolls" from this point of view was a lot more adventurous, but also for the music. In my opinion "Concerto Grosso, The Seven Season" is a new standard for Italian Prog... But also for all of the Classic Prog because conveys the Prog Metal in Classic Metal absosporbing he (and done not come to to say me that the Dream Theater are more brilliant in this sense)). Adventurous album? Well... No!!! This because the songs are simple, damned immediate and all exciting. Yes, this is another damned 70's album. But, this is the beautiful news, played so new... Too new... Also if the start ("The Knowledge") is a photocopy of the "Concerto Grosso Per I New Trolls" this new "Concerto Grosso" is more varied and powerful. Also because the production puts in stand out the power. Also a piano of "The Season Of Hope" is in possess of a war power that leaves to open mouth. The orchestra will be not it "The Royal Philarmonic Orchestra" or the "Wiener Philarmoniker" or the "Berliner Philarmoniker" or "Orchestra Sinfonica della Scala (milan)" but "The White Light Orchestra" and Stefano Cabrera isnt Muti or Mazel... But isn't fundamental because finally the orchestra and the Rock group are an only entity. The only orchestra part in "Simply Angels" seems copied from "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" (Deep Purple) but here have... More power. And in general the air that it is breathed in the songs is that of a big family that cannot betray. And in fact it doesn't betray. Another annotation: The parts vocal have the same echo that the New Trolls used in the 70's. And too the same harmonies. Ahhh, the orchestra isconducted by Stefano Cabrera, historycal collaborator of New Trolls, specially in "UT". And not a case the more Rock songs they seem gone out from "UT" (specially the bonus track "So Che Ci Sei", Italian version of "Dance With The Rain").

Welcome New Trolls. But I didn't think with an album like this. Because the years are passed... It haven't more nothing to show... But, in fund, other return would not have had sense. My friends... The New Trolls is here!!!
