I don't get what the deal is with RIO.
Most of the bands I hear sound like crap.
LOL
But then again, if there are people into this, than surely RIO can't be far off.

I have their three first studio albums (on CD), and will get the rest eventually. Excellent band, I must say. Smile

Most RIO I have is somewhere between good and excellent, but there is more to music than it. Wink

Avant-garde is VERY wide, but I don't synonomize that with RIO as they are not synonymous.

all the original RIO bands are great. I listen to Samla and EFL less than the others but they don't sound like sh*t at all, there isn't that much jamming and they all have catchy moments. ;P

Do you like Frank Zappa or Beefheart at all?

If you do, that would serve as a good gateway.

Henry Cow is the one I've heard the most easily, and then SMM. UZ would be 3rd of the original ones.

Other avant-garde ones I've heard alot... Zappa, Beefheart, Residents, etc.

Oh, okay.

I'm sure you'd like at least either UZ, SMM, Henry Cow, or one of them, once you find the type you'd like more. They take a few listens too.

You should check out Bubblemath if you haven't already. They're in the GG/Bungle/Zappa vein, excellent band!
