^^ Trouble is these are the examples used by people to justify this type of excessive lifestyle for themselves. How many times have I heard the phrase ' Oh, they smoked until they were in their 80's, so smoking won't affect me'. They tend to ignore the hospital wards full of people coughing their guts out on life support machines.
Each to their own I suppose.
Anyway.........Weekend is here - nearly

When I was managing Season's End the band were very possessive about their apostrophe, after all, without it it's just the name of a Marillion album.

What's happened here is that the apostrophes from the street signs have upped and legged it to the nearest grocers store, to be seen advertising potatoe's and tomato's. |

I remember seeing 'banana's' in supermarkets during my visits to Britain. Haven't noticed anything similar here, but I'm sure I would if I looked with some more attention.

I'm caught - hook, line and sinker
Yet again we find our language being dumbed down to the lowest denominator. If they argue that the square is not owned by St Paul, and the apostrophe is to be removed, surely the s has to go as well. That makes two foul ups in the single phrase. What a world.

^When I was a teenager I use to ride past a road called St Peter's Close every morning on my way to work -as a motorcyclist I always found the claim that he was near by was a sobering thought - I see know it's also lost its apostrophe so the implication that "they" needed more than one St Peter to cope with demand is even more sobering.

Brrr-itain braced for weekend chillSnow will hit the UK over the weekend during the coldest winter for 13 years, forecasters are predicting. Skip related content Related photos / videos Brrr-itain braced for weekend chill Freezing temperatures are set to take hold on Sunday, bringing heavy snow and bitterly cold winds from Russia on Monday and Tuesday. People will need to wrap up warm and expect disruption on the roads as the cold snap moves in from the east. Rachel Vince, of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "It's looking like temperatures will fall away during Sunday night and Monday - and next week is looking distinctly colder than this week. "On Sunday we are looking at showers coming from the east and turning increasingly wintry as the day progresses." The areas at greatest risk of snow showers are eastern parts of England and Scotland, although it might stretch as far as eastern Wales. She added: "Monday night is looking like having some more persistent snow. The areas at greatest risk are from Lincolnshire northwards although it cannot be ruled out anywhere in Britain. We are expecting enough snow to cause disruption in places. The snow will settle where it falls." Sunday will see maximum temperatures of between 2C (36F) and 5C (41F) although temperatures will fall during the course of the day, Miss Vince added. Temperatures during the night will be minus 1C (30F) to minus 3C (27F) although forecasters predict the mercury could plunge to minus 6C (21F) in some locations. |

I think I posted about this before in the Ranting Room, but while we're on the theme of punctuation:
As most of you know, I work in the heart of Soho, where there are still quite a few porno shops, strip clubs and the like. A few months ago one of my colleagues (a fellow English teacher) noticed a sign outside one of the porn emporia advertising video's. She walked into the shop and forced the proprietor to correct his mistake, even supplying him with a marker pen so he could do it. He was so astonished he didn't even try to argue. Birmingham City council could find themselves with a real battle on their hands.
Over at the Sun, this particular comment made me laugh:
Posted by: YorkieAndProud This is getting ridiculous now. Council's are dumbing the nation down to accomodate for immigrants who won't learn English - they're afraid of getting sued by them! If we moved abroad, you'd learn at least a basic grasp of the local language, and you wouldn't expect everything to be in English to accomodate you. Why should that not be the case here? If you want to live i nthis country, learn the language. and then the rest of us will be able to live without stupid things like this! As opposed to this individual, who obviously missed school the day they taught apostrphes and who has been missing the point ever since...
