I prefer writing novels because I'm not talented enough to be subtle and get everything out there in 10 pages (like Salinger or Joyce were). 90% of the short stories I read are complete sh*t. Absolutely pointless, and I mean that. Short story writing is a dying art- it is very difficult to do, I think. |

Indeed it is rather tough to do a short story. There are some absolutely fantastic ones out there though that just nail the subtlety and the balance of exposé and plot. And the tough part is the short part. Like I said, it took me 35 pages to finish my short story.

I'm also trying to think back to my short stories class last semester, and to what short stories we read.

"Counterparts" by James Joyce is one of my favorite short stories. It's one of the lesser talked about stories in Dubliners.

Joyce was always very hard for me to read, probably because the guy makes up his own f*cking words, but admittedly I haven't read Dubliners.
Haruki Murakami is another phenomenal modern short story writer.

I haven't read anything in a long time.
Why did you listen to all the tracks on Beacons twice, Kevin? |

Three times, actually. I've listened to it three times on my iPod since I last plugged it in and that's how it scrobbles from your iPod, by track, not by recent listen, I'm pretty sure.

Joyce's short stories are far superior to his driveling, meandering novels. Dubliners has a few running themes throughout that really show what a genius Joyce was at short stories. He also had a thing for his wife's farts. |

I'm reading Paul Of Dune, although it's kinda sh*tty compared to Dune/Children Of Dune.
