Wow! the Dynamic duo are really putting on a show! I guess when 2 hearts beat as one, what can you expect? yeah U2 , okay, but really , duelling pens in Virginia (almost in innuendo-land there) , go figure! I hope this will become a regular activity and not just a wham bam thank you zippo deal. Raff, that was one kick -ass review , "molto gradevole", so as they say down at the trattoria :"Can we have some mora?"

The 'oohhh' is fine, gives it character.  Seriously though Mike, the Landscape of Life review Clap   ..the more you write about RPI, the more it appears you are PA's true expert, at least in the ways I think are important

Embarrassed you too kind David... you really are. Heart Raff told me something nice...sweet...tonight. She told me she has learned a lot from me..and got more of an appreciation of it through me. She has mentioned numerous times her tastes turned towards the English stuff as a teenager.

Egoband Neo-Progressive

Review by tszirmay
Prog Reviewer

3 stars Egoband is a classic lineup power prog from Pisa that had something going for it but petered out of sight rather quickly, perhaps unable to find its course as they skirt through neo, jazz-rock, hard-rock, space and groove without clearly deciding where to make a stand. Which is why this album in particular has received such hodge-podge reviews and frankly, it’s a correct assessment. After a brief spacey intro, the title track is a bit hard to deal with, a rather pedestrian 6 1/2 minute heavy rock exercise with untimely drumming, an asinine sounding cowbell (?), lyrics poorly sung in accented English (ma perché ?) and the whole somewhat uneventful, even the moody mid-section does little to inspire any satisfaction. But the immediate follower, “What a Man Could Be” is superb space –groove prog with a hypnotic Hawkwind-like beat, an active reptilian bass and several sweeping then bubbling synth gushes, a brief narration in the center and a completely blissed-out squealing guitar rampage that deserves serious applause, a combination Holdsworth-Hillage but really closer to the fusion realm than meets the ear. Bassist Alfonso Capasso does his best Mike Howlett de Gong imitation while Alessandro Accordino coerces his organ (stop that innuendo) into the rippling Dave Stewart school of buzz-fuzz. This is a highly enjoyable ride. “Lost Friends” is metaphorical a piano/vocal duet that has a definite Gabriel feel, plushy and evocative (“as the fog clears away”) but really just a brief and romantic interlude. The next 2 minute track blends mellotron and acoustic guitar (often a heavenly match) and the two certainly exude some celestial magic. The multi-hued suite “So Far Away” is a 10 minute Hammond-led prance into harder regions, riff-heavy with grueling guitar chops, sizzling fret leads, robust synths warbles, binary drum bashing that somehow disappoints and a driving bass rationale that keeps things aligned. The vocals are actually moderately decent here, as Accordino bellows with Black Sabbathian delight. Midway through, gentle piano twinkles mingle with harsh swaths of galloping sound, wah-wah infestations and hurling electronic slashes. The next piece and my favorite here, “Peace of Mind” gently caresses the soul, twirling bass ornamentations in the foreground, blowing gently over large swaths of sonic expanse, with massive doses of mellotron to encourage the depth and passion of the skilled arrangement. The upward crescendo-seeking synth foray is truly extraordinary, especially when the guitar parallels the theme sumptuously. This is another highpoint on the Egoband menu, an acutely impressive track. ”Wrapped Up in Sweat” is back to the “raunch” dressing (yet no salad) with rabid playing on key and fret boards and a rather ordinary vocal too forced to be valuable , while the drums flail wildly and some Gentle Giant dissonance to confuse the issue. The sinister organ solo has a severely gruesome tone, the singing really sucks here something fierce and on the verge of annoying but the guitar solo has lots of subtle density to it, flush with blush feeling and charisma. “White Paper” is somehow out of place , veering into bizarre sonic territories , where dissonance meets urgent electronica , overwrought vocal hysterics and a certain lack of melody except for the majestic background orchestrations and the obvious synth slash a la Lucky Man that gores it. As usual, our “fettucini” finnforest was dead on in reviewing this partially successful ISP recording and I can only concur with his rating. A definite mixed bag. 3 personality strips

My friends mick and Raff your review sounds in my mind like Hiroshima and Nagasaki's atom bombs (
although less powerful than an earthquake of Richter scale grade 8).

I admit that many of my reviews are disgusting... But I got some reviews came to me very well... See the review of  'Live' by Blind Guardian... I do not know... Sometimes I think of having to climb... Say dreadful the Monte Zoncolan in the Giro D'Italia (the hardest climb in Europe to do by bike.. 10km in 2 hours)... Other times, the reviews are so natural to me...

I believe that if the reviews come from the heart (in collaboration with the mind) they will always be beautiful and sincere.

So... In conclusion... And I must conclude... micky... Why you not reviewed even your favorite albums?

This is the map of the climb to Monte Zoncolan (from the harder slope... Just to understand)

Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition
Goblin Italian Symphonic Prog

Review by UMUR
Prog Reviewer

3 stars Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition is a CD re-release of the 1975 Goblin album Profondo Rosso. It´s a bit more than merely a re-release though as the original album only included the seven songs written and performed by Goblin while Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition includes Giorgio Gaslini´s compositions as well. So this version is actually the original movie soundtrack. The original album served more as a Goblin album. Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition replaces the original album in the catalog.

Profondo Rosso ( Deep Red) is a Giallo ( Italian thriller/ suspense movie genre which is famed for elaborate and bloody murder scenes) movie by Italian director Dario Argento. Most of the songs in the movie are composed and performed by Goblin and are in instrumental progressive/ fusion rock style but especially one of the compositions written by Giorgio Gaslini has an important role in the movie. The child´s doggerel tune School at Night serves as the murderer’s calling card and is played several times throughout the movie. It appears here in several versions which includes music box version, Child version, Echo version, Celesta version and Instrumental version. The Goblin songs also appear in more than one version which means that the album has a total of 28 songs. Most of them very short.

It´s up to discussion if we really need all sorts of versions of different songs when the difference between versions are not more evident than is the case on this album ( with the exception of School at Night). I must admit that I prefer the original album over this release as I find much of the material on Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition quite superfluous and the flow of the original album is nowhere to be found here. Another thing I would like to point out is the mix on this version which is not as organic and pleasant sounding as on the original album and it´s really a shame as some of the songs sound much harder than they were intended to originally. The soft and pleasant seventies sound on the original is missed by this reviewer. On the plus side it´s great to finally hear Giorgio Gaslini´s contributions in album form but overall I can´t give Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition more than a 3 star rating even though I gave the original album 4 stars. It´s simply not enjoyable for me to listen to the same song in three or four different versions ( that are not really that different from each other) when I want to enjoy an album. Get your hands on the original album if you can, but as the music is as great as it is get Profondo Rosso - The Complete Edition if it´s not possible to get the original album. Don´t miss out on the fun because the music on Profondo Rosso is very recommendable if you enjoy instrumental progressive/ fusion rock with a strong suspense element.

hey Mandy....  thanks for the kudos...  much like Raff.. reviews are labors of love for me.  I try to make them interesting to read ... and informative.  These albums are not easy to find.. nor all that inexpensive for most around here. I can't put the album in their hands or force them to spend the jack on them so I try to bring them alive if you will.  I have a couple of 'pet projects' for RPI that I want to work on to try to make it easier for someone who can't decide if they want to spend $20 bucks on something that sounds like a dish from the local Italian joint.  The written word only goes so far.  Especially the style of reviews we see too often here where people interject their likes and dislikes, or worse..their thoughts about the status of an artist here. Not to mention this site is plagued with reviews that just go on how much a person LOVES or HATES an album.. like that matters to anyone else.  They want to know about the album. However I am, like most I suspect, a harsh critic of myself and will only review and post it if I feel I have done a review worth the time and energy.

Your reviews... again.. we are our own harshest critics.  I love your reviews.. always have.. always will.  It's all about personal style... and that Mandy.. you have in spades. Heart

as far as what I review... completely scatterbrained...  moments of inspiration that get me... or like the review I plan today... seeing an injustice that needs correction.  I don't review just what I like..  that would bore me faster than those who were reading them.
