Back after a four week Easter break with a show largely playing new releases, thanks to the numerous PROs who supplied. I also find that two albums are in top 20 of UK sales last week.... that is unusual for what we normally play. Beledo's (holdsworthian) jazz rock continues to grow. Waiting some time to get hold of Delta Saxophones' follow-up to their excellent reinterpretation of Soft Machine (released quite some time ago), now tackling the Krimson's songbook. Thanks to Kim of Precognitive  for the +1(?) download. Check out the Rick Wakeman rearrangement of Tool's 'Sober.'... where has the venom gone, refound in playing the original version later in the show? And I managed to find more of my favourite Swedish singer Harriet Ohlsson (but elusive recording-wise) again with Hellsongs, this time making a classic Judas Steel song, safer.  Still thinking about who we should have as artist of the term. See you Thursday.

Spoken with Scott McGill, who has agreed to be our Musician of the Term. Scott is well known as a virtuoso guitarist and recording artist, recently ranked in amongst in the world's best fusion guitarists. As a teacher he has worked in the USA and most recently in Brighton on the English south coast. He has published and presented numerous papers on 20th century serious composers. He and his family are now back in the USA.

This week, music by Prince interpreted by Herbie Hancock and a nod to William Shakespeare. Otherwise a goodly mix of genres.

Second show of the term with that mix of jazz, recent releases and archival materials... most of which being ignored by other radio stations for no good reason. A reminder that Scott McGill is our musician of the term. More from French fusionists Mop Mop with their mix of Afro and Caribbean musics. What Rune Grammofon do well, in the forms of Panzerpappa and Motorpsycho,  musically separated by some distance. Something from the new Snarky Puppy album, which I admit hasn't grabbed me as quickly as previous albums, (but it maybe growing slowly). Intriguing album from Eric Bibb: delta blues meets Anglo Celtic, at least in the line-up. Samples from prog bands' recent releases - let's be honest, retro prog bands, because the literal use of 'progressive' seems largely absent  -  Big Big Train and Konchordat. And then more from 70's brass rockers Kush, trying to outdo Chicago with another Chicago composition. (And don't forget  to check out the station's sustain programme from about 8.15pm BST on Thursday).

We continue featuring Scott McGill's music, as musician of the term.  Something from the new Gregory Porter album. After a pleasant Saturday evening listening to Yes live, one of those Yes classics. Alas another major musician has died, so music from my favourite Tomita recording. Interesting avant rock from the Bent Knees album released next week. And more blues by Eric Bibb with an nice interpretation of a Ray Davis tune.

At last got myself the new Tim Garland album, awarded an extremely rare 5stars by Jazzwise. Other jazz newies from Jack DeJohnette, Fire! Orchestra. Rock flavoured newies from the excellent Bent Knee, Sulfur City and Radiohead. Rock pastiches including The Squirrels' attack on Dark Side. And our musician of the term Scott McGill has forwarded me some private recordings of him playing his arrangements of some serious pieces.

New jazz from the Claudia Quintet (indeed 2 samples) and former EST drummer Magnus Ostrom. Enjoying Les Claypool and Sean Lennon's album (out this week), with its nod to psychedelic Floyd and Dukes of the Stratosphear.  Modern French prog from the long-lived Ange. Two quite different pieces from our Musician of the Term, Scott McGill. Late 70's Neuschwanstein, doing a fair impression of early 70's Genesis. A reminder that the late John Peel was a great supporter of prog (even though he subsequently claimed the genre was "Bollox, absolute bollox", with the final track lifted from a John Peel radioshow recording.

Watched the 40th Anniversary Woodstock DVD last night and stuck by two things. First, how many of the artists in their prime or about to take off internationally back then, are now dead. Second, how original Crosby Stills & Nash (apparently Young was there but his contract forbid him being filmed!) must have sounded, hence the inclusion of CSN&Y here. And then there are  a few tracks dating around 2 years of 1970. The rarely played full version of Nights In White Satin, a couple of obscurities. Then there are the new releases: spot them. And a single long track including our musician of the term Scott McGill.

Good news, there is a ALT2 Show tonight, although this will be the last live broadcast until probably October, as this university's academic term finishes this week. The show features the usual mix of old, new and reissues. The last play of Scott McGill as musician of the term... as Scott tells me that  he and family are heading back to the UK... with a classic from the Brand X songbook. Then a few discoveries made since October 2015, the 2013 Ange album, (and thanks to Kim Sagn) North Sea Radio Orchestra. The original Sonny Boy Williamson provides most of the blues. And then the fascinating Zhongyu (delayed in the post because of my house move). In week I heard Train's cover version of Led Zep's 2 album - why attempt a near copy, when Led Zep set the standard? - there is Heart attempting to create clearwater between their and the original LZ version. And the enjoyable post rock take on psychedelia by Claypool Lennon Delirium  (I must stop saying 'Claypole').

Back after a busy summer break and some excellent new album releases in the last 4 or 5 months. Just a reminder, the first show is designed to introduce new listeners to the range of musics likely to be heard here, through the coming year. New jazz from the current darlings of the UK jazz scene, Go Go Penguin and Dinosaur. Then one of my favourite albums of the year, the post rock (?) of Bent Knee. My belated discovery of the Year, (thanks Kim for pointing me in the right direction), the North Sea Radio orchestra who have a new album...Some excellent covers by King Crimson and Sweet/Hoffs. Interesting ambient from Steve Lawson and Padang Food Tiger. Then something from a former Loughborough student, rated by the Guardian as one of the UK's top ten folkies this year, Gren Bartley. Then lots more, as revealed below:

rsther belated and for tonight:

Continuing to air the music that came either by mail or electronically over the last 4 months: so thanks to the record companies and PR who sent M. Ross Perkins (claimed to be a modern Emitt Rhodes......maybe), a couple of goodies from Moonjune Records, a recent discovery the retro prog of Security Project, and through to the psychedelic Latin jazz of Sao Paulo Underground. However, I've raided the archives for (East) German punk, (played it before) Rai mashed with rock, Polish metal prog, and a remastered major Yes clone. Then there's the newie from 'the best rock violinist', Jerry Goodman. And then a sample from the forthcoming Umphrey's McGee album, Zonkey, the ultimate mash up record?

TONIGHT:
A taster from the new album by Donny McCaslin, member of David Bowie's last studio recording group. The enthusiastically received album from Dwiki Dharmawan
A. Then a couple of oldies in the jazzy section, note two Jan Garbarek tracks joyously using two  fusions of different world music. . My current favourite Bent Knee tune from an earlier album: rock wailing at its best, but then the master Chappo of Family is included. What is the music of Dirty Loops: short burst of jazzy soul... maybe the modern day Level 42? Sme from the new electronica from Richard Pinhas/Barry Cleveland .
