I just gave Momentum it's first spin. Very different. Neal often gets criticized for being formulaic and self-plagiarizing, but there doesn't seem to be a hint of that with this release. Very impressed with the freshness and different approach. "World Without End" defies explanation at this point.

Darn it I agree. The main theme in World Without End is so so so catchy like

I picked up Momentum this afternoon and gave it one full listen. My first impression is mixed, the first 2 tracks I had heard once or twice on YouTube, but sounded a lot better on the album, Thoughts Part 5 kicks a lot of ass, it's so heavy! The remaining songs need to grow on me, especially the epic, which I'm not surprised. It's pretty long, and not much stuck out, but I'm sure repeated listens will pay off, as all Neal albums do.

I will have to say that Mike Portnoy's influence can be felt on this album, more-so than any previous Neal album, not counting Transatlantic albums.

So - His daughter had a hole in the heart, presumably fixed by surgery and not by prayer....and thus he thinks that Jesus was in fact responsible for saving his childs life......the man is a bigger buffoon than I can impossibly imagine........I'll bet his Pastor's wallet is bulging with dollars made from his CD sales.....There is one born every minute..... |

Feel free to start a "Neal Morse is a buffoon" thread and post your ignorant remarks there. I say "ignorant" because you really don't know what you are talking about or have been badly misinformed. Neal may very well be a buffoon about some (or a lot) of things, but you clearly aren't in a position to make a judgment since every conjecture you made in the above post was not even close to being accurate. I would encourage you to know a little more about what you are going to attack, otherwise you are the true simpleton.

I watched the special edition DVD and I must say, it contained a lot of interesting information. I already knew, but Randy George and Mike Portnoy contributed many ideas to Momentum, as Neal only had a little bit of music written before the recording sessions. There is even a slightly candid moment during the film where we hear Portnoy discussing how some songs should be omitted from the album: Freak, and another song. That other song didn't make it thanks to Mike's input, but Neal wanted Freak to stay on the album very much.
Mike also worked like an editor for some of the songs, which is not necessarily anything new with both Transatlantic or Dream Theater; but he had an incredibly large say in what went on in the music of Momentum, which is not usual, as Neal usually has most of the music written before recording sessions. Neal even admits that a lot of parts were cut out of the music, which is the opposite of what usually happens with his music. It shows you how much influence Mike Portnoy had on how the album was presented.

this involvement of portnoy is good news for me. he had some questionable input with DT (growls) but he is great at arranging which is why i think the TA albums just flow so well.
i don't have the album yet, so no comment. one thing about getting into a new prog album is that there is usually some riff or lick that grabs me. i look forward to hearing that part in the next listen. slowly, all the chunks come together. i sit there enjoying one piece while excitedly anticipating the next. close to the edge taught me this :-) |

Quick and dirty early review (song by song, out of 5 stars):
1. Momentum - 4 stars (great melody...nasty Paul Gilbert solo....fun); 2. Thoughts, Part 5 - 5 stars (probably my favorite track on the album...very reminiscent of KC's song "Red"); 3. Smoke and Mirrors - 5 stars (beautiful...best Neal Morse ballad yet); 4. Weathering Sky - 3 stars (if there is a weak link on the album, this would be it); 5. Freak - 4 stars (very unique and interesting); 6. World Without End - 4 stars (great stuff throughout, but perhaps a tad too long for my taste).

I was just browsing the thread - and based my line 1 premise on information gleaned from the threads above....The internet has informed me that.... "One part of his conversion to Christianity, omitted from Testimony but described in full on Testimony Live, was that his daughter Jayda had been diagnosed as having a hole in her heart that required open-heart surgery. However, before Jayda was given surgery the hole disappeared following a church service in which Morse's wife and others prayed for God's healing" From this......we have the possibilities... 1) A self healing organism like a human body (especially a very young body) is probably capable of repairing even a good proportion of heart tissue, unlikely but maybe a possibility.... 2) The Hole in the heart was misdiagnosed...or the severity misinterpreted...and self healing was possible 3) The hole in the heart WAS remedied by surgical intervention....and the story is made up in an attempt to justify the "mumbo jumbo" of whichever lunatic religion Morse's pastor is making his money out of..... 4) The Lord Jesus Christ heard Morse's church's prayers and using his omnipotent powers decided that he's mend the heart.....But at that same time ignoring the same type of prayers by his worshipers all over the universe who's children died horribly of cancer/malaria/starvation...etc.... .... Now I may be "ignorant" but by applying Occams Razor I think that 1,2 or 3 is far more likely than 4......... I am absolutely delighted for Mr Morse that his daughter is alive to breathe the good old oxygen of mother earth, I also happen to admire him as a superb musician and composer of some wonderful music that has given me loads of pleasure...but I still think he's got it awfully wrong about the reason his daughter is still alive despite a fairly unfortunate incident......... "Prayer" has absolutely no power to heal - except that if the "subject" of the prayer knows about the prayers - they may be cured by the power of subconcious healing - placebo effect if you will.....Double blind experiments on healing have proved that it's just a pile of bunkam.... If anybody you know is diagnosed with something serious (I hope that doen't happen of course) tell them to ignore main stream medicine and sacrifice a lamb or two or pay to a sky fairy - it's bound to be work...coz Neal Morse's daughter is the living proof.......Praise the Lord....

I'm just trying to figure out what drives you to puke all over what is an "appreciation" thread that has now moved on to discuss his new release Momentum. Not only was your initial premise wrong, you compound it by accusing other people of lying and other shenanigans for monetary gain. Here's the problem, neither Neal nor his pastor have much money to speak of. You obviously think that they do for some reason. You would be wrong. That is the height of ignorance.

And everytime a religious preacher opens their mouth thay are exporting blatant un-truths...thats LIES to you sonny....
If you don't wan't to believe that fact - then don't complain if some religious lunatics crash a plane into a building somewhere because of the TRUTH of religious "revelation".
A U.S. embassidor has just been murdered....why? because some nuts decided to poke a bit of fun at the "Prophet" Mohammed on the internet.......
Anyway where is your proof that NM's pastor doesn't make any money out of his religion??
does he live in a hole in the ground and own no earthly possessions???
hohoho....

god dammit! i got puke on my shoe.
i'm really impressed by fundamentalists who can keep it up so long. it's usually those who make a career out of it. with the rest, it's a revolving door...except maybe the radical, willing to die folks. watched the vid for Weathering Sky. sounds great. love mike's drums. i could do without neal's lip-syncing and dancing in the field:)
