I'm a little 'meh' about the album being self-titled, but I'm pretty much over it already. I super stoked for the music though. I anticipate it will pretty awesome; there is at least one instrumental confirmed, and a symphony orchestra on every track!!!

I always feel that self titling anything but a debut is just lazy. But what do I know? I've never released an album. As always, I'm skeptical that DT will produce anything new and interesting.......they've never let me down yet Having said that, I'm sure I'll check it out at some point, and the orchestra thing could be good (or not, we'll see).

I'll choose lazy over distasteful any day. The band has has sh*t album titles and album covers since Octavarium.

The orchestra is my only concern. I'm not a fan. It usually turns into too much bombast.

They made the orchestra thing work on Six Degrees. I'm pretty sure they can pull it off now.

The band has proved that they can be very tasteful with orchestral arrangements in their music. Jordan Rudess is a classically trained musician for Fripp's sake.
Octavarium had 3 or 4 songs with an orchestra behind them; The Answer Lies Within, These Walls (?), Sacrificed Sons, and Octavarium. All those songs used the orchtestra in beautiful ways, and not tacky or cheesy like Symphony X, or other bands. In fact, the only other bands I felt used an orchestra well besides DT, are Yes, Haken, and sometimes Symphony X. Metallica did OK with A couple of songs in the beginning of S&M, but overall, that live album failed miserably.
Point is, is that orchestral arrangements compliment Dream Theater's music well. Look at all the Score! Aside from the orchestra being a little out of tune in Six Degrees, they brought new life to the band's music, especially Metropolis Pt. 1, which I consider the Score version to be much superior to the studio version, or the Marquee version, or any other live version.

I'm good with the album title..means they don't have to expend energy deciding on some deep, dark title that could have 12 meanings and a reference to Portnoy's leaving (ADTOE).....although simply DT is a reference to a new starting point.
Most musicians start out with classical training...I doubt most parents pay for 8yr olds to learn how to shred or dbl bass roll like a maniac.
Actual orchestra music on each track? Meh, will have to see......I would prefer heavy, hard jazzy riffs to orchestra backed stuff. I agree the Six Degrees worked.....but I would not stick to that recipe going forward. As talented as they are I would expect something new and exciting, they need to blow my socks off after the dismal ADTOE.
There is a lot of great stuff right now, they need to join the bandwagon or be left behind. I do hope for something special.....

Being a fan of classical music, and how they made it work in Six Degrees and Octavarium, I think the orchestral thing is great. Not sure how I feel about it being self-titled at this point though. I think i'm more worried about the album being produced poorly again than the quality of the songs.

What do you mean? You can't do a self-titled album if you are too far into your career? Why? What does the album name has to do with the quality of the music?

Not in favour of self-titled albums, they always need a nick so in the end people gives them a name anyway (i.e. Genesis 'Shapes', Peter Gabriel 'Melt' etc etc). So this may well become known as DT 2013, not very exciting... An artist (writer, painter, sculptor or whatever) is supposed to give his works a name. Imagine they would not give names to the songs and just title them 'track 1', 'track 2', 'track 3' ...
I have moderate hopes thanks to the hopefully refreshing effect of Mangini, but only moderate to be honest.
Orchestra? I don't mind, they seem to be able to work it out well, and if that's in any measure a sign that the music will be a bit more symphonic / classically influenced (a la Six Degrees suite), it's welcome!

I call Genesis "Genesis" Peter Gabriel "Peter Gabriel 3" (also wrong I know) The Beatles "The Beatles" and I shall call Dream Theater "Dream Theater"

^ There are only a few people who don't call "The Beatles" the white album or "Metallica" the black album. I suispect that this will not earn itself such an iconic unofficial title but will be referred to in reviews as s/t or eponymous.

No one said there was a connection between the music and the title.

Because it's weird ... and dull. This is something that people used to do in the olde days (I don't know why, because it only demonstrates lack of creativity). Dream Theater? It already sounds dull. Having a band naming its album after themselves ... talk about corn and cheese.
But anyway, that's relatively trivial since we have other, more important matters on hand to talk about.

Indeed, and surely I'm not one of them. At least all those albums had something about their cover which suggested the nick, either being totally white, black, having a car, a melting face, a scratch, the shapes pieces or whatever. At least if they do it in the debut it's always easy to just call it 'debut'. Let's hope the new DT cover will not be that dark-purple void with the floating band logo because people will have trouble thinking how to call it. 'Logo' perhaps? 'Deep Purple'?

I definitely do not call Metallica "The Black Album" but Must admit to sometimes slipping and saying "White Album". I then correct myself.
