Some I forgot: I can't really get into the Moody Blues for some unknown reason. I greatly appreciate what they've done for prog and such, but I just find them... boring and outdated. I really hate Coheed and Cambria, they're horrible, seriously... I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy Genesis that is semi-rare, but when I'm in that mood I love them. They're just so eccentric to a point that it's difficult to listen to. I don't dislike them at all though. I already talked about my affliction with Rush... Ayreon is so ridiculously cheesy that it's quite hard to like, I love a few songs but most of it just bleh, and several of my favorite singers are on his albums so that's hard to say! I already talked about my affliction with Marillion... I find Tangerine Dream to be incredibly boring, seriously, and not even beautiful. I listen to a LOT of ambient music that I find incredibly beautiful and quite amazing but Tangerine Dream doesn't fit in that category. They are just awfully outdated. I already talked about my affliction with Dream Theater... I dislike most non-extreme prog metal bands with the exception of RIverside and Pain of Salvation (for the most part): Symphony X, etc. That's all I can think of for now. I generally dislike high-pitched vocals though, excluding Sigur Ros.

What are you doing on a prog-rock forum ? Sure there are some metal bands that have some connection with prog but I am pretty sure you will find more to enjoy on a metal forum than on a prog-rock one...However I tend to think that prog is very present these days in metal...

I would agree if someone called "Pawn Hearts" a weird album, but the rest in the discography of VdGG is pretty normal, at least to my ears.

Now we're talking ! I almost started doubting myself reading all those enthusiastic comments about Pawn Hearts. At least you agree it's weird. Some even call it great music !
On the other hand I can agree with you that other albums by VDGG are more like ... normal. Godbluff is not weird at all for instance and a pretty normal and fine album. |
Don't get me wrong; I would give "Pawn Hearts" five stars. I am not afraid of weirdness; on the contrary, I welcome it.
|
In that case a small test now: which GG stream track (on PA) do you like best ? I guess it would be Knots as I think it's the weirdest of the lot. I pick Prologue since it's the most accessible one.
(Unless of course you're not into Gentle Giant at all ) |
I personally think that "Black Cat" or "The House, the Street, the Room" from "Acquiring the Taste" are at least as equally weird as "Knots".

^ Hopefully there will be some clarification, as I don't see how it follows either.

I don't often read reviews, but those are very good and insightful reviews, Ivan. Seeing them is a delightful surprise.

I noticed it too. I think Ivan is just trying to shock the community here. I can't believe it.
I challenge you to react on this, Ivan !!!

I haven't made that step yet. And I don't think I ever will ....
Maybe I'm not open minded enough but right now I'm checking out their stream songs. Not gonna happen !
Same thing with Sigur Ros. I really gave it a chance but it's a million mlies away from my taste.

My main problem with RUSH and DT is the fact that their music revolves around technicality... Not a bad thing, but just not what I'm into in prog right now.
The Flower kings - Just couldn't see what was so special. Might not be a good album to judge from, but thats my opinion built on that album.

Genesis, and any band that sounds like Genesis specially the vocals and melody. I've been listening to prog music for almost 2 years but still I can't get their music grained in my ears.

Do you like heavy stuff? If not, I really can't see you liking either DT or Rush. But if you do, from what I read, Signals and Test for Echo have nothing do with technical stuff. And 2112 only the epic is sort-of technical, but not in the metal sense. I always related Images & Words synth/keyboard work with Marillion, I know it's odd, but that's how that album hooked me at the begining. Now I love because I truly find it great. Though my favorite is Falling Into Infinity. I haven't heard Stardust We Are, but I know that in those days they were more Retro, and not a big fan of Retropolis and Back in the World of Adeventures. If you were to check something more from them, Space Revolver might click on you, or maybe Sum of no Evil, despite not being a fan of the later. If you like pretty complex stuff with jazzy leanings, then the double-monster album Unfold the Future is a must.

Where did that come from??? I absolutely LOVE Yes! And like a said with those bands, I just think that they're overrated. I listen to tons of ambient, but Tangerine Dream has been outdone on so many levels that it's not even funny.

I agree, They are full of talented musicians that sing about stupid stuff that we laughed at when we were 7 years old. I could never understand the huge fanbase that Zappa generates.
|
Maybe the huge fanbase that he has generated is because he really was a genius, musically speaking. Come on people what albums have you listened by him to "testify" that? I mean, okay, if you heard a good bunch then fine, but if you haven't heard any of his classics it's pretty much absurd to say such things.
|
I have heard a great deal of Zappa, and everything I have heard had lyrics "I just can't get into". I agree, and stated, that they have great musicians, but please, before saying my opinion is absurd, allow me to listen to some of your suggestions that may sway my opinion of Zappa the other way. I'm always open. |
Try "The Yellow Shark".
|
I tried again, I just can't listen to Zappa, Maybe it's a pre-conceived notion that I won't like it, but I just can't.
