I have to say, I do admire you, Alan.... afaik, your organisation is the only one going down the pan quicker than my own (don't get me started, they've just fired an entire level of Operational middle management.. ) and yet you're able to maintain a great sense of humour...
all credit to you, mate...

Thanks for the support guys. I'm now 70% a civil servant.
Jared - I think there's a phrase for it, isn't it called "gallows humour" or something?

I just want all of you Shed folks to know that if, one day, I've suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth, it won't be because I got fed up of you all overnight, and elected to leave without starting one of those nauseating 'I've had it with PA' threads...
It will be because, I will have been made redundant. If that happens, living on site as I do, I will have no-where to go, and will be vainly attempting to set myself up in a seedy bed-sit above a shop on the High St, whilst attempting to sell my car to pay for the first 2 months bond/ rent and signing on at my nearest Job centre, 20 miles away. At such a stage, I *might* be able to manage 2 posts a day from my local library...
I kid you all not, the beginning of 2009 has so far been f**king awful workwise, and it might just come to this...I've already been lining up stuff to sell locally/ shove on ebay, so I don't have to take so much with me...

That's bad news. I sincerely hope that it doesn't come to that.

Things that bad Jared? |
they could quite easily be, Rob... the CEO has just appointed a ruthless hatchet man from the pub trade to make wholesale redundancies, and cost-efficiency savings absolutely everywhere. He's convinced that none of us are working hard enough, and we are all by nature thieves and liars. You just wouldn't believe what is happening at present, but a public forum isn't the place...
anyway, where were we?....
ahhh yes!...
the RBS.....

Ah yes, the RBS. We've just appointed the Chairman of Sainsbury's as our new Chairman. His experience of selling beans should come in useful, seeing as we're crap at being a bank.

Hang on a mo. I have an account with Nat West.
Not that there's a lot in it.
Which brings me on to asking - Out of interest (sorry for the intended pun) but how many folk have savings with a big bank rather than a building society or the Post Office - OK I know the PO savings is done through an Irish bank. By bank I mean bank banks and not former building society banks? Apologies to the wider community but this may be a Brit thing?
The reason why I ask is that I have never contemplated saving through a big bank as their interest rates didn't match those from the building societies/PO. And presumably they had to earn their income rather than have some of it coming in as deposits. Which, presumably has had a contribution to the bad investments they have made in the past.

I'm with Nationwide - the last big mutual building society. Not that they're by any means perfect, but at least as an account holder I also get to vote on policy every year - thankfully they've managed to retain their mutual status, despite some very aggressive take over bids. The Co-Op and John Lewis could also weather this recession better than many of their competitors - not being answerable to shareholders whose only interest is maximum profit for minimum outlay has its advantages.
Jared - I'm really sorry to hear of the woes affecting the dear old YHA - I did a lot of hostelling when I was younger, both in the UK and abroad, and I hope that the hatchet man doesn't do too much damage.

Hope things work out ok Jared. I have fond memories of the YHA (namely the one in Hamburg where we got woken up at 3am when they raided the room to chuck someone out). We'll have to go into business together as decent music consultants on a mission to rid the country of Cowell music.

thanks guys, I do appreciate your kind words...
I have confidence that, being at the 'budget' end of the market, the organisation will ride out the recesssion in some form or other...
although how closely it will continue to adhere to its original, charitable aims (and the reasons why I joined it) will frankly be anyone's guess...
and I also fear that the path toward...erm...'rationalisation'...will contain a bodycount which will make Universal Soldier look like Bambi ...
soooo then... who's got the most comfortable floor, for a homeless fandango, then?... (shagpile carpet owners only, need apply... )

I've got a couple of tents you can borrow, plus an inflatable mattress and sleeping bag. Just don't play your prog metal too loud after 10 or the neighbours will complain.

Um yes. I live near Ground Zero of the second Great Depression. You asked for a room. Don't tell me that you wanted a job too. Unfortunately, those are becoming few and far between in these parts.

oh Jared I'm sorry, I've been in similar straits for a few years (which is why I stopped teaching martial arts and had to find something else).. your one of my very favorite people here so I hope you get the help you deserve, and as Scott said, you have places to stay here in the US (California in my case)
