1st listen to this one on Grooveshark:

World Record

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the American band Discipline, but their vocalist Matthew Parmenter, is a big fan of Peter Hammill and he has a voice which is similar in sound.  I think that they could also be described as "gothic horror prog".

I also find that his vocals are quite similar to Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame.  I am a huge JP fan so I would think that I would also like Hammill's voice, but to a certain extent it sounds like Judas Priest out of context or something to me. LOL

I've heard of the band Discipline, but I haven't heard any of their music (yet). Anyway, I'm quite warming up to Hammill's voice now. At first, it was just kind of off-putting. It's certainly unique and instantly recognizable, which I suppose can in turn alienate or unite listeners. What's also interesting is Hammill writes most of VdGG's music, but I don't think the band would have had much success if it didn't have stellar musicianship, which David Jackson, Guy Evans, Hugh Banton, and Hammill are all exceptional musicians.

What do you think about World Record so far?

World Record was good.  It seemed fairly accessible.

This next one without the Generator was actually the first album that I ever bought from them.

The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome

I can't say that I've listened to it more than a few times.  There is no Hugh Banton on this one.

Well David Jackson isn't on Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome either except on one song (is this correct?), so I'm not sure how I will react to this one, especially since Jackson and Banton were so integral to VdGG's sound-world. But since I haven't heard it, I'll remain open to it, but Pawn Hearts is next on my list of VdGG albums to listen to. I still haven't received Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other, H to He, Who Am The Only One, Pawn Hearts, Still Life, Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome, and Present. I already own Godbluff and really enjoy it.

Is World Record much different from Godbluff? Has their sound changed much since that album? I'm always interested in hearing about stylistic evolutions.

Correct David Jackson is only on the two Sphinx songs (2nd one being only a minute long).  This one is more new wave and relies more on violin than organ or sax.

World Record seemed to be a bit more accessible than Godbluff but with only a couple of listens of Godbluff and that first listen of World Record it is had to say.  I am definitely not the right person to ask about their stylistic evolutions and whatnot as I am still getting to know the band as well.

And now for something completely different:

Well, thanks for the feedback anyway. You've already heard more VdGG albums than I have.
