although i like it, ADTOE is hard to play through in one sitting. i don't think i can do that with any third wave prog albums, except maybe spock's beard. everything is so compressed and loud. DT are worse than some. the new one will be brick walled too.

Yeah, I love Train of Thought too... overall I guess it's my favourite album of theirs. And I did like Black Clouds better than Dramatic Turn (but unfortunatley, it is one of the few albums in which the bad lyrics actually bother me... they are so bad). |

:O Thanks! Here is a snippet from the interview: Dream Theater are back working on new music and have been for a while. Just wanted to see how things are progressing toward the next album. JR: We’re doing very well. We’re kind of in the homestretch of the whole thing. I was just finishing some keyboard tracks and we have some more things to do, but we’re definitely looking at the finish line at this point. You’ve got one album cycle under the belt with [drummer] Mike Mangini and he had to get up to speed with that last record, but how’s he progressing within the framework of the band? JR: Having Mike in the room with us as we were doing the writing and everything was such a wonderful thing. The man has such a strong energy and such a great player that it made a big difference to our process to have him there, have him contributing ideas. The way I see it is like, he’s such a specialist in his area. He’s got such a rhythm math brain and that addition to what Dream Theater already has in the composition department was so cool, ’cause we’ve been able to do things I’ve never done before. There’s some stuff on the album that I’ll rhythmically is very, very cool. With a new piece to the puzzle, does it give you a renewed sense of energy at this point in the band’s career? JR: Oh for sure. Anyone who’s heard this album or stopped by the studio, you’ve just got to smile at the drumming, it’s so outrageous. He does some fills that are like, ‘Oh my God!’ (laugh) I can’t help but almost like laugh." |

^ Well, it's really hard to publicly say anything bad about a new head in a band whose recent album had the man's drums a little softer in the mix (according to one review).

Jordan and all of them are such nice guys. Seeing the announcement makes me think the new one might just be a purple background and the DT symbol in the middle. I bet the album is called Dream Theater. It's time for them to do a self-titled album! I'm psyched.

No self-titled albums, please. They're far too into their careers for such a thing.
However, I'm hoping the title isn't 37646 words long either. |

I like long titles names i suppose, much like long song titles (that are good), really add to the piece imo.

A self titled album when they're 28 years into their career would just be wrong.

*SIGH* It seems that credible sources at DTF are saying the new album will be self-titled.... But I think it's a rumor only, and I believe nothing until the band makes their own announcement.

IT'S OFFICIAL!!!
Link: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/news/dream-theater-album-20130605 Dream Theater - New Album 9/24!!! Dream Theater—John Petrucci on guitar, John Myung on bass, James LaBrie on vocals, Jordan Rudess on keyboards and continuum, and Mike Mangini on drums—have announced that their eagerly anticipated new studio album will be released September 24: the first self-titled release in the band's nearly three-decade career. [Dream Theater 2013] Dream Theater 2013 Dream Theater was recorded at Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, with John Petrucci producing and studio luminary Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) engineering and mixing. The album marks a brilliant new chapter for the always adventurous band, their first to have been written and recorded with drummer Mike Mangini wholly integrated into the creative process from the start. “I see every new album as an opportunity to start over,” says Petrucci. “To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Xc_1fwJmBk8 Dream Theater will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180 gram double LP, and a limited edition boxed set. Pre-orders are scheduled to launch in July at the Roadrunner Records Webstore. Of course, Dream Theater will tour in support of the new album—full details will be announced soon. For up-to-the-minute news and information, please visit www.dreamtheater.net/tourdates. |

I like the idea of the album being called Dream theater. To me it makes sense.

I knew it!
Self-titled albums are not just for initial releases. Many bands will use a self title when they've turned a corner, are getting back to the essence of the band or when it's just a strong album. Totally makes sense. They are firmly in a new chapter of the band and seem to be tight as hell personally, musically and creatively. |

..or when they run out of ideas for what to call it. Well, as long as the music's good I'm not complaining (I have to admit I'm a bit doubtful, though.. I hope Mangini has given some cool, fresh ideas in the writing department.) |

I'm sure there will be a lot of people down here in PA guessing and hoping and doubting about the album, but I'm sure it doesn't have to do with running out of ideas. I think it's just what many people said: they are a new band. A different band without MP.
So, I guess it all make sense and I'm sure it will be an amazing album. I'm one who loves ADToE and I think it will be fresh, and especially, without the annoying backing vocals of the ex-drummer. |

For me DT died when Portnoy left. This maybe the first DT album I don't buy immediately. I will wait to see what people say. But I will disregard opinions of anyone who likes dramatic Turn of Events.
...and I don't find MP's vocals annoying. Quite the reverse in fact. Edited by Snow Dog - June 07 2013 at 05:38 |

Polarized opinion to me indicates solid art. Looking forward to this. That video is cool. I love Petrucci explaining how he wanted the guitar sound to be akin to chocolate cake...rich, layered. So cool. The band just seems more relaxed. Portnoy was a big personality and very intense. Not to mention, a recovering addict. That's a lot to deal with in any setting. He still exhibits lots of dry drunk behaviors, so it's probably for the best he's doing lots of different things. Example of such behavior; his website, his drum-cam videos.
