I am 14 years old, and started listening to prog at 13 years old(really young) Well I started to listen to prog with Pink Floyd, I think that the first song Iv'e ever heard of them was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" not too "proggy" but it made me into the band itself, and when I first listened to "The Narrow Way" I started listening to it again and again, I hadn't noticed as a full night past :) , and I still had to go to school after that, in the bus I was listening to it again, After Pink Floyd I heard "Funny Ways" by "Gentle Giant" and that was when I really started to try and get to know a lot of progressive bands, especially progressive rock.

The Paris Theater bootlegs from 1971 are by far their best in my eyes. |

I consider drone metal to be progressive...

Can I remind everyone that discussing bootlegs is technically against forum rules. (5. No Illegal activities) - and that includes recordings of the full Zabriskie Point soundtrack sessions.

Well, if the band were to release some of those shows I would be perfectly happy and would buy them, and I wouldn't have to wonder how to get some bootlegs. I have bought just about everything that's available from them, so I wouldn't really be doing any harm to the industry.

Dean, I was under the impression the full that all the tracks recorded at the Zabriskie Point sessions were now on the new double cd version of the soundtrack? Quite a lot of unreleased gems on there, bloody good it is too. Correct me if I'm wrong though. |

I apologise for raising the topic of bootlegs. As a disclaimer let me point out that I haven't mentioned any specific bootlegs, just a general reference to 1969-1971 One the other hand, of course - thanks to the bonus discs on the recent reissues of DSOTM, WYWH, & The Wall - there are a few ex-bootlegs that have become official releases. Which do you prefer? The Wall demos, or the 1974 live discs included with DSOTM or WYWH?
Furthermore - who's got the massive multi-disc boxsets and can you please advise if they're worth the money?

The World Tour '74 live discs are a treasure that I'm so pleased have been given an official release. The non-orchestral live versions of AHM and the lengthy live versions of Embryo are others I would love to see given an official release.

To which I would add the encore (Echoes) from that 1974 concert mentioned above - might as well have the entire set, eh?

Actually, I was the one who mentioned bootlegs first, so I apologize for that. I hope we have not encouraged anyone to seek these out on line or elsewhere (but in the days before MP3's, bootlegs were generally circulated by fans who owned all official releases and wanted more but were not being offered it by the bands and record companies........I'm sure there were people who just wanted free stuff as well though). |

You know, there is a web site whose name I can't recall right now, that had many shows by many bands available for listening, including some Floyd shows with these tracks. It was an "official" site, which sold some of the shows as downloads (but not all), as well as various memorabilia. Not sure if it's still around or was shut down or what (I used to get email updates from them, but haven't for some time). |

I'd be most interested in the names of those sites, if you ever find a way to dig em out of the old cabeza

I haven't heard the Wall demos on the new Wall release, but I did get the new Dark Side and Animals (the middle versions, not the immersion ones), and the concerts were really nice, and believe they are more worthy than the demos. I didn't really want to spend the big money on the immersion sets, and am not sure that the few extra tracks would have been worth it. As well as with The Wall, I'm not sure it's worth spending on that album just for a bunch of demos. Though I must say I did hear a demo of Another Brick in the Wall part 1 that I did like a lot, though it was the only song I thought worthy of the bunch of demos I got to hear, and I'm not sure if it's part of the discovery or immersion set of the wall... if I had a way to know for sure if it's in the discovery edition I might just as well think about getting that one. |

I guess I am swimming against the tide here, but I don't particularly like the Sid Barrett period, and I do love the David Gilmour era albums. The only thing I miss in AMLOR and The Bell is Waters' lyrics .. the rest of the material - the compositions, the musicianship, the sound engineering - is five star.
