He meant that if your education system is anything like the one in the US, then Australia's will confuse you.

Here we go percentage:mark wise.

80-100% = A grade (except in english, which you need 85%+ for an A)
70-79% = B grade
50-69% = C grade
30-49% = D grade, which is not a fail here.
0-29% = E grade, which is a fail.

Classes scale according to the difficulty; getting a C in the maths class I'm in is the same as getting an A in the grade below, but the same as getting a D in the class above. What this basically means is I can afford to score less well and still recieve the same amount of points towards my UAI (University Admissions Index, renamed ATAR for some reason, which is a point system in my state [The ACT] which goes up by increments of 0.05, up to 100, but only one person can get 100. The harder/better the Uni course is, the higher UAI you need. Getting anything >80 is considered very, very good.) In classes, you are scaled and ranked against other students, and only a certain number of grade A's are given out. So, if 5 kids got 100% and I got 99%, I would get a B, which is absolutely f*cking stupid. So, by being in a class with smarter kids, my score (and my UAI) is pushed downwards. Total f*cking bullsh*t, imo.

So basically, you get even worse grades for being less smart than the smart kids, and this continues right down to kids who get really low grades. The (fascist) school which I attend will effectively force a student off a line they do not do well in into a non-tertiary line (which means it no longer contributes to your UAI) so that they can stop you from slightly lowering the school's average with your poor grades.

Also, UAI is made up of your best 3.6 tertiary classes, which is also f*cking stupid.

Yeah, we don't do it like that here. In the first place, getting below a 60% is a failing grade.
