Fun, psychedelic, as japanese as possible. some of their music hinges on kraut or indie-ish noise rock but some of it doesn't.

Jesse know PA apparently and I told him I added MAR to PA and the band was happy to know that and so they looked to see if I posted my review and at first they thought your review was mine, so I told them it was yours and that we're both fans of MAR.

I am right now writing my review for their album but I will take more time and give it a few more days to see what comes up more in my mind.

This is one of the hardest reviews I've got to write since it is so hard to pinpoint their sound, as I find them to be quite unique and original.

I usually don't do this as it's not my style but I figure that if Kayo Dot receives such hype why not MAR which are as worthy of such high regard.

This is a FABULOUS album, one of the most creative I've heard in recent years, a fantastic release, a must for fans of everyhing creative and progressive (not necessarily avant-rock).

GET IT!!!

HOLY f**k those samples are good! It kind of reminds of what I've heard of Larval, except actually good (I haven't even made it all the way through the one album I have, I'm not sure why, but I try to put it on and I don't find it interesting enough to continue). Thanks for the heads up! Hot damn, I don't even remember the last time I was blown away like this. The weird things is that I've heard part of Rip through... before, but it didn't affect me nearly as much as the samples from that I heard just now.

What's interesting about their genre-blending is that one sound is always cohesive to the every other sound, something I believe takes a considerable amount of imagination to achieve.  It all feels natural, as though the band is playing in a pre-arranged genre... but usually that happens when a band has found their own sound and they're actually good at it, rather than creating a largely heterogeneous hodgepodge of spontaneous, clearly classifiable genres.  Just an incredible experience from beginning to end.

Oh and, I was looking at Flat Earth Society's site the other day and it appears they have a new act called "Answer Songs" going now, with 12 songs written, all of which were influenced by another specific song.  You can see these specific songs at their website www.fes.be.  I've only been able to listen to three of the songs that are supposedly all available to listen to (To Walk a Mermaide, The Everlasting Sea, and Thursday 12th), but they're all great.  A noticeable change from Psychoscout is that they've got female vocals this time around.  And I emailed the band's manager for info, asking if there will be an official album for "Answer Songs" like Psychoscout, so I hope to get a reply soon.

Oh boo!

We have to wait until April 2009! for Answer Songs to be released as an album worldwide.  But it's going to be a double album with other new material as well.

Taiga is a wonderful album, but I really have to check out their other albums in addition. Very interesting band indeed!

I found some time ago a double CD collection of this French band Collection d'Arnell~Andréa, (1988-1989), containing the major part of their work five records and an EP.
a mixture of chamber rock, ambient  and post -punk. I had some trouble getting through the first 4, but the last two ; "Villiers Au Vent" (1994, dealing with WW1) and Cirses Des Champs (1996) are quite interesting, even so the voice of singer Chloé Saint-Liphard is an acquired taste.
Here is their website with some samples :

I don't know if any of youse have listened to this band but I recommend you do, they released an album this year titled TOHCOTH.  It's funny doom-ish avant metal... even if you're not fond of metal, at least listen:

Look at what arrived to Wayside Music:

Art Zoyd's early and great works have been unavailable for such a long time that it's too easy to forget what a strikingly original and amazing band they were in their prime. One of the original R.I.O bands (they joined in the second wave of bands...

According to Steve Feigenbaum (Cuneiform) who asked the people in charge of this release, no.
The band itself gave the recordings to the label who will issue this only as Japanese mini-lp format.

This was posted in the Recommened... 2008 thread, but I found it interesting enough and decided t post it here.  Well, I'm talking in past tense.  I am posting it here, RIGHT NOW.

They're supposed to be releasing an album this year so I'd keep a huge eye open and staring at this album (even if that means unsynchronizing your eyes).  I think it may take some time for some certain individuals to warm up to the cold, strange pool that is the vocalist's voice!

Ah, Yes, The Red Masque;
I added them last year, and recommended them several times (also wrote a review for Feathers For Flesh). A very innovative band with dark atmosphere and sometimes eerie mood but creative and interesting.
Their new album Living Fossils should be released this year (they've finished recordings).
A great band out of the prolific Philly avant-rock scene.

Assaf, I picked up that box set you recommended in the Electro Acoustic thread, and I really like a lot of the stuff I've heard so far.  My favorite as of yet is the piece by Olivier Messiaen, but unfortunately it appears that that was the only electro acoustic piece he ever did.

Dang, I'll kick myself for missing that.  I'm going to look into their other material as I wait for their album.

Also, I don't know if any of youse are aware, but there has been speculation amongst fans that Sleepytime Gorilla Museum may be releasing new material this summer or at least sometime this year.  Lately, they've been playing a handful of new songs, and I don't suppose those are exclusive to their film (which will be filmed this summer, too!).  Low quality songs have been shown on youtube so not much can be recognized as to what their new direction will be, but one of the songs, I noted a similar atmosphere to a combination of A Hymn to the Morning Star and Sleep is Wrong.  It seems to be a mostly vocal-inspired piece with less consonant melody of Hymn, along with loud bursts from percussion.  I'm not sure if that description really fits it, that's how I remember the song when I listened a while back, it was one of the only songs that was somewhat coherent.

I still haven't got it myself, I'll order it next month after the paycheck comes in (been very naughty with cd purchases these past 3 days... bought stuff I shouldn't have....  something to do with some Japanese mini-lp reissues of some band... guess which...).

Glad you liked it; I'm really anticipating this.
I've also been enjoying those other electro-acoustic albums from Dhomont and Ferarri I've mentioned here; excellent pieces!
