I had a great joke, but I feel it might be in bad taste.

As fun as this is, it's not discussing reviews. So if we can wrap this up or move it else where that would be smashing.

Thank you

Wrong. Forget what you have seen and go with your first instinct. Whatever other people think of whatever albums should not influence your ratings whatsoever. Be fair, that's all it takes.

Say Warthur:

Got anything to say about the music itself?  Rather than how they wanted to space the album for vinyl?  I'd rather see a review about the music rather than who had the best "comeback" album (whatever that means, especially since Echolyn were not on break).

3 stars Ooh, I don't know guys. For some reason echolyn's reunion album leaves me rather cold. For starters, the division of the physical product into two CDs when the running time could easily fit onto one seems an odd decision to me. Cynics might accuse the band of wanting to sell the album for the price of a 2CD set but only providing 1CD of music, but given that you can listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp for free if you're frugally minded I think that they deserve the benefit of the doubt on that front. I suspect it's more that they want the CD experience to be, on a tactile level, comparable to the LP experience, and to create a definite break midway through the album.

I do have to wonder about that. It seems to me like the action of a band who aren't wholly convince their new opus can hold the listener's attention for a full 71 minutes... in which case why not edit it down? The fact is, there's a few too many diversions into flabby, cheesy, Spock's Beardy filler for my tastes here. In the end, it's nice to have them back but I think Anglagard have the better comeback album of 2012.

Hmmm.... It would not take much to improve that above review. Just a paragraph on some of the tracks specifically and perhaps leave out the dig at SB as has been mentioned - not that hard to do really.

I like Warthurs reviews usually as he is so succint and it gives me a quick indication of what to expect on albums.

Yep, something of a digression I fear as Warthur's reviews are usually pithy, succinct and informative. I've sent him a PM stressing the requirement to justify an opinion with some sort of description of why the music just don't stack up for this listener.

"Flabby, cheesy, Spock's Beardy filler" is pretty much the sum total of the impression the music made on me to be honest. It's just very, very bland.

Plus I would submit that the way the music is packaged is decidedly relevant here, because splitting the material between two CDs is an unusual choice when it could easily fit on one and a buyer who hadn't carefully checked the running times might be thinking they were getting more music than is actually on offer. Ultimately it's something potential buyers are going to want to consider when you're looking at obtaining the album and mulling over the "do I want to pay the price for the 2CD version" question so I think it merits being mentioned in a review.

oh the irony of a Marillion fan calling Spock's Beard  cheesy.

I see two Paul McCartney albums plus Abacab in your top albums list there so don't judge. ;)

Anyway, I've expanded the review somewhat to make my impressions of the actual music clearer.

Fair enough - but why isn't this discussion being had over the fact that there are so many 5 star ratings for this album?  Is this strange piece of weirdness REALLY a necessary piece of EVERY Prog lover's collection?  Or is it something that more adventurous people should try out and those just getting into Prog should stay away from until they've become more acquainted?  Maybe the PA admins should start telling people all over the site that their ratings are inappropriate? Wink

(I'm not serious.)

Is your 1 star rating a retaliation for all the 5-star ratings - yes or no?

(I'm moderately serious)

My 1 star was based primarily on the fact that I did not enjoy the album (I was creeped out by it) and will probably never listen to it again, and as such I would want my readers to see a negative reaction.  A neutral 3 star just would not cut it for me in this case.

One shouldnt retaliate to 5 star reviews with 1 star unless one is serious that the album is really just a 1 star piece of trash. 1 star albums in my reviews are all trashy, you can always find an added star if there is something redeemable on it making it one for collectors only. I cant believe that MotW would warrant 1 star as nothing they do is trash and therefore does not deserve such treatment. Ok i am preparing myself for the old adage - one mans trash is another mans treasure - but when it comes to music I think its important to judge the music on its own merits - if hundreds love the album, that should be enough indication that the album does not warrant the 1 star rating (I learnt this the hard way, but I am glad i did as there is so much out there yet to experience if one simply gives it a go, such as Bjork, who I am beginning to enjoy lately when at first I hated her).
