I tried, trust me I tried, my ears stopped hearing just before my eyes healed over. It doesn't matter what other people think, know, or believe and nothing anyone says, does or writes is going to make a difference - that's not defeatist, that's realist, real realist, real pragmatic realist, real honest to goodness pragmatic realist.
I have said that I will not argue faith, or belief or religion or spirituality, I'll even power-down and go into sleep mode when anyone start talking philosophy, determinism, existentialism and all that Plato and Nietzsche stuff, (to me that's all different sides to different coins, but it's still numismatology), and here's why:
Some people have a need for something that they cannot quite identify ... something more than just breathing in and out ... People searching for whatever they are looking for will find their own answers in their own good time - you cannot push them, a little guidance may be, but they will find whatever works for them and they will live by that or with that - the greater their need the sooner they will find the comfortable answer perhaps, I don't know - I'm guessing. I have reached the point not where any of these answers were satisfactory or unsatisfactory, believable or unbelievable, but just not necessary - it wasn't the solution that was at fault, but the question, or more accurately the need to have something I could not quite identify.
So science for me is not a list of answers that fulfils a need, it's just a set of tools that solves a multitude of practical problems, science without application is as useful to me as a chocolate coffee pot, yet I know that theoretical science leads to applied science so I'm happy to know that theoretical science exists and that its "answers" work because if they do not then they are useless for any practical application.
So I'm not Bright or a Murkie or a Super - I'm a Stop-shining-that-light-in-my-eyes.

Jay, have you ever had one of those moments where you're playing and you look down and just watch your fingers move as if it weren't you doing it? Absolutely, you just hold on and let it go. To bad the longest it ever lasts is a song or two for me and Santana can do it all night.
He's a great example, his licks are actually pretty ordinary but his tone and articulation are sometimes just "other-worldly."
Some guys can just tune into that. I can't.
One of the best guitarist I ever saw live was a guy called Little Charlie from San Francisco. His blues band was called Little Charlie and the Nightcats, and their lead singer was one of the many reincarnations of elvis.
They have many records and they're ok but live, it's like the guy had a cable from the back of his head off into the astral plane.

Yeah, Little Charlie Baty, I've got most of the CDs. Rick Estrin's a hoot, and a fine harp player as well. I've never seen them live though, shame.
I saw Johnny Winter back in the '80s (when he was recording for Alligator) and it was the same thing. He'd play these 10-15 minute solos and the whole crowd just got lost in the experience. It was collective. It was like if he didn't go, we couldn't go and if we didn't go he couldn't go. I was sitting about 10 feet from him and I couldn't even focus on what he was doing technically, i/we were all just gone. total commitment from both sides of the stage. Something I've never experienced at a prog show.

yeah, imagine that we as musician don't feel that magical times or that connection with the audience when we are on stage... you know...??? when everything feels perfect while playing... that experience is really magical or supernatural if you want... I won't say nothing about Santana, I don't like him or his music... but music really have something special about it... of course, much more than adrenaline and chemical reactions... so much more...

There3's a line in a song by Chris Difford and Glen Tillbrook (recorded by Rockpile) that goes: "you feel in the first set that this is a nightmare you can't hear a word and you can't feel a thing....
and then in the next stet its perfectly magic and all of your problems are suddenly mine.

The closest to that I've had a prog show was actually at the Yes in the Present show, during Close to the Edge. Obviously the singer was glowing because he was living the chance of a lifetime, but the audience was just humming with energy. The communal feeling I had during "I get up, I get down" was something I'll never forget.
And yes, Mike, that kind of subjective experience does affect my beliefs in the nature of the Universe.
Umphrey's Mcgee does a pretty good job of tapping that energy, though they're a jam-prog hybrid thing.
I've heard that about Johnny Winter...you're not the only with a story about him just playing from another plane of existence. I never got to see that though.
Little Charlie is supposedly retiring but Ezrin is continuing on. Most of Ezrin's energy transfers to disc pretty well, but Charlie was just another artist live. I saw him at a little club in San Fran from about 10 feet away. I rarely go to big shows anymore. It's virtually impossible to get that experience.

I've experienced it at a few Prog shows - being in the audience of an Enid gig was like that on several ocassions - something it is difficult to express in words - expectant anticipation ... like you were holding your breath while they played.
Crowd hysteria or euphoria is something different I think - Peter Gabriel on Clapham Common at an Artists Against Apartheid protest singing Biko and I Have The Touch... that was the same but somehow different

Weird that I found this...
Honestly this happened to me last night...I stayed up till about 2:30 am writing a solo part for a song my band had been working on. I felt like my fingers were floating and the bends and pull offs were just flowing. There was dead skin all over my high B and E. I woke up in the middle of the night (7am or so lol) and I couldn't move my ring finger AT ALL. I was wondering if I had nerve damage or something and I was worried. Seems ok now tho but I'm gonna rest it. Very rare for me too. I did get it on my 4 track though!!!

There is truth here. It sounds peaceful.
At least for now, mine is not to be a peaceful soul. I do have that need. I get that many beings on this earth do not and some cannot even comprehend the attempt. But it is a basic hunger in my life.
I don't actually remember ever arguing with Dean. I've learned some things, but no fisticuffs yet, methinks.

"the comfortable answer" - for an atheist like me that's simply a euphemism for "delusion", as you of course already know. But if, as you say, you not only don't care about those answers, but also reject the question ... that also makes you a true atheist. Especially as far as the practical aspects are concerned.

Religion is causing huge problems all over the world. Dennett also dedicates a whole chapter to the question of whether doing scientific research on religion is beneficial. I think that we would all be much better off without religion, and even if religion doesn't play an important role in your personal life, I think you agree that it does in other countries, and its influence is growing. Some projections show that in 2050 half the population of the world will be Muslims ...
Feel free to do whatever you like, but maybe a little bit bright light is not so wrong in this situation.

The poll is a revealing figure, but some people needed to discuss the subject - not only Mike. If he hadn't meet believers discussing about faith, belief, agnosticism, atheism, etc... he wouldn't have gone on and the thread would have stopped at Page 1.

Because Blonde Aryan housewives (English, Norse, German, American or Russian) are some of the many incarnations of Evil. If Satan exists, he speaks a germanic language (which could explain why the catholic priest perform exorcisms in Latin - despite the fact that Hebrew or Arab are mightier languages on a magical/occult/religious level).

Perhaps, but it's hard to win converts with an attitude openly assailing people's dearest beliefs. This is something either the New Atheists don't understand or don't care enough about. Sam Harris and Daniel Dennett seem to be the more able to handle it though, perhaps given their backgrounds in psychology and philosophy respectively. Some people on the fence may take well to this "new sort of attack on religion," something that doesn't care about hurt feelings, but revealing science as it were to mature religious people with attacks is only going to make them defensive and hurt all the more, because honestly they have no good response to the attacks. It could make them bitter, and in fact probably does. Truthfully, I think it would be a 100% good thing if most forms of religion were gone overnight and scientific literacy went through the roof all around the world. In reality, that is completely impossible. Scientists have to learn to be persuasive and caring when dealing with these closely held beliefs, not for the sake of being less than upfront with the truth, but for the sake of actually convincing people to believe as they do.

I think your position and Dean's is very accurate for what you said... Mike tries to confront and I think he cannot argue by pushing peoples to debate... when you talk and share ideas, that's a way to persuade people... I think that some religions should suffer because of their past behavoir... but I insist that the physicial satisfaction do not help people in their way of living, I mean, living not just breathing with some degree of comfort... but well... many religions have survived for thousands of years and don't seem to be on trouble... so...
