Not a big fan of either Division Bell or Momentary lapse, but Division Bell is far superior in just about every possible way.

Of course, I'd take any 70's Floyd album over it any day.

Well, if we're being honest with ourselves, we will realize that it's the hardcore fans that are the most critical and complain the most........because they have been led to expect greatness from their idols.

Having said that, the word "appreciation" does indeed mean exactly what you say..........but do we have to take everything literally?  My general feeling with such threads is that we discuss what we like AND what we dislike about a band and their output, with the understanding that it is all coming from the perspective of people who appreciate the band overall.  Smile

As much as I love and adore Gilmour plus Richard, Division Bell had a missing element and this was Walters.

Indeed, it is missing Waters. But I'm not sure that's entirely bad. We already got the masterpieces of the 70's, and even with Waters it's not certain they would have achieved that again (though Amused to Death kind of shows us that perhaps Waters was already ready to give it another try). The Wall and The Final Cut already had quiet a different aproach than the previous few albums. And the same lack of Waters allowed Gilmour to explore some different ideas, and the guitar playing may just as well be better than ever, at least in the solos.

Just like what the people above me said, appreciation is exactly how you've described it, Dean. It still means just what it meant a year ago, five years ago, 50 years ago. I don't think it has anything to do with being old-fashioned.

The Floyd albums sans Waters are good, but like The Final Cut (which is pretty much a Waters solo album) are nowhere near the quality of those produced by the band as a whole.

I think that the Division Bell shows a truly matured band.
I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

If "matured" means "aged", I agree. Big smile

I don't hear that superiority.

And yet I do.  How can one explain such a discrepancy?  Wink

Oh come on, I'm just trying to be funny (and failing).  Obviously, we have different tastes, which is of course the root of all arguments in prog land.

i like Division Bell much better than Momentary Lapse.  The latter is kind of a half album.  Terminal Frost is just lazy as is the intro and Dogs of War.  Division Bell is full of great songs and solos....even if a bit derivative of previous efforts.  Final Cut beats the all though!  Big smile  I absolutely love that album...even more than the Wall.  Give me Animals, Wish You Were Here, Meddle, and Final Cut on desert island and I'd be happy.

@Kati-you gotta stop bouncing around!!   LOL

While Final Cut is not my favorite, I like it much better than The Wall, so I'm with you there.  My desert island Floyd would probably be Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, and that Animals tour bootleg I used to have of the one show where they included a third encore of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene (which they hadn't played in more than 5 years, and was only played at that one show on that tour).  Actually, I wish I still had several bootlegs from back in my Floyd fanatic days, as a lot of that stuff was amazing and better than the albums.
