I assume that you fully intend to include Metallica in that new subgenre.
Of course not. This new subgenre will EXCLUDE 99% of the bands of any genre (Steven Wilson and his side-project Opeth, Rush because they're Canadian), for some illogical reasons.

Here is a DT instrumental that you might like Steve.
I used to love that track.
I still do. It is probably the only DT track that I would bother recommending to Steve. Although, oddly enough I think that he might like Dominici's O3 A Trilogy - Part One. It is mostly a singer-songwriter with acoustic guitar type album.

They were the next prog band I was into after Rush. And while it wasn't as much an addiction and I definitely am not a fan of James LaBrie... I will always respect them and at least appreciate that they are able to craft great songs on rare occasions.
Metro pt 2 is also a great album. (Though extremely cheesy on the ballads)
And Dream Theater always had insanely w**k useless lyrics to me.

Quite frankly I think that they are strongest on their ballads and that LaBrie sounds his best on them. Although he is a decent screamer it does get old listening to him scream after awhile.
