Alex, I finally read the Wiki article for Atlas Shrugged (because I'm not going to read a book that long), and I would like to ask you a question: How does John Galt plunging the world into a massive depression, killing countless numbers of people, just to prove the point that he doesn't want to share his free energy not make Ayn Rand a bad person?

Counter question.

Let's say there is one person in the world with the skill to cure a wasting disease (spot the Rush song).  Let's say, AIDS.  It takes four hours per procedure for this individual to cure one person of AIDS, and costs him $1500 in resources and staff for each treatment.

Is that person obligated to cure people?

Is that person obligated to teach others how to cure it?

Is that person reasonable in expecting people to pay for either?

Look at me being all philosophical and sh*t.

You should listen to Epignosis first, since you've been obligated to that longer, and because it's awesome.

By the way, Alex.  I ought to finish up a novel I started writing back in 2005.  It's halfway done, and I really think you'd appreciate it.

I'm clapping because you make good logical arguments 99% of the time, even when you're drunk off your ass.

Which one is that? Is it one of the ones you've mentioned to me before?

Fair enough Scott.

Some things go beyond profit, Rob. Did Jonas Salk become a millionaire? Also, your premise is unrealistic because no one person discovers things like that. ;-)

Alex, that is not what wiki said, that is the conclusion I drew from what I read. If he did not in fact engineer a depression like I read (and I also read other things so that may not have come from wiki) then I will stand corrected.

Not everybody wants to work for profit.

Well... to attempt to explain it as succinctly as possible, he basically was tired of working his ass off and watching increasing loads of people leeching off of everyone who decided to be diligent instead of taking the easy way out of everything. He stopped working on his invention for that reason, and convinced other like-minded people to quit innovating so that people would either be forced to learn to be more independent or suffer for making everyone else do everything for them (if there's no one to leech off of, people are then forced to accept the consequences).

That's an incredibly simplified and horrible explanation, but my brain is fried and I don't care to expand or alter anything.

I'll put it this way: you have a right to get money from your discoveries to repay the equipment and time investment, but you also have a moral duty to save as many lives as possible.

I was not being 100% serious; in the end, you can obviously do what you want. I've also never seen the Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogie DVD, unfortunately, but I have the audio CDs. And those are pretty good.

I just really enjoy Epignosis too.
