I'm not that much (used to be a hardcore Nordiques fan as a kid so I'm still bitter).

Ouch Thanks for the reminder. 
 
I used to like the Nordiques, but not so much the team they became.  It'll be interesting to see if the Canadian dollar stays stronger than the US dollar, if some teams leave the US and move back to Canada.  I am sure that it is certainly helping the Canadian teams compete better with the US teams.

It started off really slow, but got better.  I'm definitely going to need a few listens before I form a good opinion on this one.  Despite being a Rush fanboy, I am always willing to try new things; or in this case new old things. LOL

Let us hope.  To be honest I think that it might be too much on the jazzy side for my tastes, but I've been trying to expand my horizons in that direction so maybe it will connect with me after a few listens.

Yeah, you never know.

Are you familiar with any Jazz Fusion? I know that I appreciated Third more after I actually started to like jazz much more; I never did too much before that.

I've only dabbled in jazz and jazz/fusion.  Mostly Bill Bruford related.  Some Chick Corea and the Rippingtons.  I also have a Dave Weckl album that I really enjoy.  But most of these are drum based, which tends to be where my tastes lie.  I like the way that brass instruments sound in bands like Chicago, but I don't really seem to care for them to much as played by jazz bands or prog bands. I'm not really sure why though, other than the strangling cat thing that I hear when I listen to VDGG.

To someone who isn't familiar with jazz or experimental music, I don't think Third is a good starting point at all.

But it's incredibly rewarding in the long run.

I fell in love with it on the first listen though so I can't really tell.

It's no wonder that Third isn't coming easily then.

Try listening to Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra. That was the first jazz fusion album I ever fell in love with, but it actually took me some getting used to, so don't fret if you don't like it even after a few months.

Yeah, same here, but my tastes had already expanded quite a bit by that point as well.

I do have Apocalypse and Birds of Fire from Mahavishnu.  I've only listened to them a couple of times each.  I'm sure that they could use some more listens. 
 
I also like bands like Niacin with the strong bass guitar and hammond organ. I recently picked up an album from a local band called Organissimo that features the hammond organ.  They definitely play some pretty good music.
