My solution requires a minimum text character requirement, which is already in place when reviews are submitted (at a minimum of 100 characters, currently). My point was that the admins wouldn't promote a bad reviewer in the first place, so the chance of having featured reviews that are at least 300 text characters and low quality is not very likely.

^ It's up to admins to decide. Personally I don't see the reason why 300 or more words reviews can't be of low quality.

Okay: Why would an admin promote someone who writes bad reviews? They wouldn't. They only promote people who write worthwhile reviews. Thus, the collaborators and prog reviewers who write reviews on album are inherently a higher quality than novice reviews, whether they be 100 or 5000000000000 words. Some may be better than others, but it's understood that collaborator reviews are going to be at least at a moderate level of quality regardless of length. My solution simply filters collab/Prog Reviewer reviews less than 300 word to go to the side column on the right side on each album's page. The Collab reviews that are 300 words or more are put in the featured column on the album's page. It's really very simple. This would give an opportunity for newly added collabs/prog reviewers to be promoted without having their old, bad reviews added to the featured spot on each album's page, but still entirely visible for people to read on the side column.

Of course they can. You're right 100% The point seems to be getting missed. No one is saying short = bad long = good So please, no need to continue with that, we all agree any review can be good or bad. You said who cares about effort? Well sorry, but I do. I put a lot into mine. I know others do as well. And I know others have expressed similar feelings of "I really try on mine and you can tell (x) just rights a one paragraph brief summary". Now, if someone doesn't want to that's perfectly fine, we can review however we want but that was kind of mean. "Screw effort, just the result?" Well no, I think a longer review should be rewarded because the more effort does mean something. Hell, even if it's bad there was still an attempt to explain it more. And 300 isn't much! 100 words is nothing, I've probably typed near that in just this post! I'm guessing most reviewers hit 300 and if not, they won't need to rack their brains to do so Edited by JJLehto - March 04 2012 at 21:41 |

Word? See look at that! I was being serious. Without trying I wrote over half of what'd be needed. Upping the word limit to 300 is not going to kill anyone. Edited by JJLehto - March 04 2012 at 21:48 |

No no 300 is perfect.
Since I really hope this happens: Here are the lengths of some reviews on the front page, by different members. 177, 663, 526, 350, 179, 814 Everyone is over 300, or over half (which means if you wanted to hit the limit you do not even need to double the length) ! |

I guess we all write reviews first of all for our own pleasure. The possibility to see them on popular site is already a reward. Isn't it?
There are many ifs. OK, if you're reviewing some obscure album your 300+ words are welcome, but if the album was already reviewed hundreds of times who needs them? Are you sure you have to say something new? And quite often the only things I need to know about the album are track listing, line-up (including guests) and sound quality. For me that's enough to decide whether I need one more live version of "Smoke on the Water", "July Morning" or... add your favourite tune. Edited by NotAProghead - March 04 2012 at 22:12 |

300 does sound reasonable. My reviews as of late are just over 500 and that is about the size of the entire review submission box, so 300 would be super easy to accomplish.

I never made a point that said you shouldn't write short reviews. If an album has a ton of reviews already, and someone writes a 100 word uninformative review, so what? All contributions are worthy and will be published, but only the 300+ reviews from collabs will be featured in the main column.
That's not a review though!

^ But it could be the most helpful part of a review.
By the way, only M@X can implement your ideas if they will be accepted. But M@X is always busy. Edited by NotAProghead - March 04 2012 at 22:22 |

Track listing and line-up are on the album page right beside the artwork and can literally be found all over the internet with the ease of a few simple keystrokes in google. Sound quality can also be easily determined this way. AND again, the reviews that are short and contain all of what you've listed above will still be listed on the site regardless of length.

Well you can find the track list and line-up at the top, so what you're expecting is that someone write an entire review on the sound quality? It'd be hard to even break the 100 minimum with that. As for the limit, mine are usually around 200-250, with the occasional over 300, and the occasional long one (usually for stuff I really love) so I'd be pushing it I guess, haha. Your best are way over that limit though. Also, you're not a prog reviewer or collab so your reviews would remain in the side bar until you get promoted.
