i started to listen to music seriously when i was like 12, then it was metallica, megadeth etc. after that came dream theater, because they are metal and my mum likes prog. after that came porcupine tree (and i ditched dt&prog metal), and after that of course steven wilson introduced me to experimental music and now i'm hooked. i think it's safe to say that all music i listen to today is discovered, directly or indirectly throug SW.

now i'm 16 and guitar music occupies less than 50% of music i listen to. it's mostly experimental, electronic or rock-based.

I'm 16 and I can't stand metal, especially prog metal.  My favorite classic prog band is most definitely Genesis and I also love Jethro Tull (good Tull, not crappy metal tull).  Some of my top modern prog bands are The Tangent, Introitus, and Manning.  So yeah, I definitely err on the side of folk and keyboards as opposed to metal. :)

I love how 18 year olds here apparently think it's cool to say Prog Metal is horrible. Yes, yes, we know it's a stereotype amongst older proggers, but it's perfectly ok to like whatever music. Stop bashing poor Prog Metal just to show us you're different. We get it.

Well, I'm 16 and I mainly listen to more modern progressive rock for my prog although I'm well versed in the classics. I like my metal separate from my prog.

This elitist attitude some people here have towards prog-metal is lame though.

Eugh geez. This thread just seems to be full of whiny people trying to say:

'I'M SO DIFFERENT. I'M 16 AND I HATE PROG METAL AND LOVE CLASSIC PROG OMG OMG I'M SO DIFFERENT - LIKE ME GUYS'

I love both and don't  have anything against people who don't like the metal side, but brandishing that fact like it's something to be proud of is incredibly sad.

I do not enjoy Prog BECAUSE it makes me different. I enjoy Prog, as a side affect I am different.

Not true at all. I know many young proggers that cannot stand prog metal and love genesis.

He was kidding.

Wow.  Just looked through this thread for the first time since I followed up the OP with my light-hearted  (and apparently bad, sarcasm)LOL

I was surprised at the number of times people took it seriously despite the emoticon, and sorry to those who had to tell people I was just kidding.  Stern Smile  I'll be more restrained with my smart-a** comments next timeLOL

Wow! This thread as slightly more than 1 year! I never tought it would last that long when I posted it! Still a very controversial subject talking like if prog is too old for youngsters. I'm certain prog will get more popular as time comes I'd say in five or ten years from now. There as to be a fourth wave and I hope it'll be better than the third one. I talked to a lot of metal heads who are turning to rock and that's a sign. Though prog metal is still more popular today for the youngsters, I'm certain prog rock will catch up in a few years.

I think this is not an interesting matter. Nobody cares if someone listen to prog to be more alternative.

I honestly can't take this thread seriously at all since 90% of all the posts are just this with different wording...

Im 15 and I would MUCH rather listen to stuff like
Rush, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Tull, ELP etc.
Than stuff like Dream Theater.
Although im a fan of Opeth
I would say that i listen to 85% Classic Prog
                                              15% Prog Metal

i'm 54 and after decades with Magma, Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Canterbury scene, Zappa etc. I finally bought my first Dream Theater album, the latest one. You're young but already you have found lots of treasures. Keep going, there's still lot to explore ...

Merry Christmas Thumbs Up
