I never understood the whole "mandatory attendance" thing. I feel that most classes don't even need mandatory attendance policies because if you don't show up to class and learn about any of the material that way, you won't do well on quizzes and tests. Unless like Pat said it's one where they just regurgitate information that could easily be learned without having a professor tell you everything.

Math Theory is most likely an introduction to proofs class.
He could combine the two. Biological Mathematics exploded in the past few years and continues to accelerate. I was doing neurological research for a few months before I realized it really wasn't my thing. It would be a path worth considering. |

"mandatory attendance" could be so the lecturer/professor gets paid, most education administration seems to be a numbers/head-count game these days.

Well he's still only a sophomore, so he has a lot of paths open. I will definitely mention it to him.

Also, to get a little back on-topic, I thought this was an interesting presentation.

That's not the case in my experience. Administration requires it for many introductory level classes in an important sequence that's judged too necessary to leave to the whims of students they find to be irresponsible because of their placement status. Many professors do it on a personal basis for individual reasons which I feel mostly boils down to fragile egos and control issues. |

Yes, mandatory attendance is in my view just an ego issue where teachers want to exercize what little control over others life has granted them in the only way they can. Also, if they feel (know) that their subject is of little of no relevance for nobody they need to proof themselves to be important by forcing students to show up.
A few probaby do it out of an old fashioned but quite commendable desire to teach discipline to young punks and show them that showing up for things they don't like will take them farther later in life than slacking but the percentage is probably low on these. |

I don't see how forcing people to attend lets them learn that. It makes them still hate showing up for boring things and frothing at the mouth for a time when they have the supposed freedom to skip.
I find it much more fruitful to keep attendance completely optional. The first time a student misses an exam because you are having it in a different building and only announced this on one day of class, they tend to take attendance more seriously. |

And now after another accidental shooting, they burn the man alive. Yay for the justice system right?

Any sympathy for the female basketball coach and her fiance who were executed by the ex policemen? What did they do to deserve to lose their lives?

Who said they deserved to lose their lives? I have sympathy for them as I have sympathy for those killed by current policemen. We just have a problem with the current policemen's behavior in trying to capture this thug. I mean, you can't really defend them shooting up cars just because they happen to look like his or burning down a cabin that may or may not have him in it. Would rather due process than this: |

Who said i defended anyone. I asked if anyone had sympathy for innocent victims That's all. Don't make it more. The "thug" knew what the end line of his rampage would be. The innocent probably never knew what hit them.
