Eine Grobeinteilung der deutschen Dialekte erfolgt üblicherweise entlang der Benrather Linie in die niederdeutschen Dialekte im Norden, die die „Zweite deutsche Lautverschiebung“ nicht mitgemacht haben und die hochdeutschen Dialekte im Süden, die von der Zweiten deutschen Lautverschiebung betroffen waren.
Die hochdeutschen Dialekte lassen sich nochmals in mittel- und oberdeutsche Dialekte einteilen. Als (Sprach-)Grenze zwischen mittel- und oberdeutsche Dialekten wird häufig die „Germersheimer Linie“ (euch/enk-Linie an der Fränkisch-Bairischen und die mähe/mähet-Linie an der Südfränkisch-Schwäbischen Dialektgrenze) angeführt, was aber heute als veraltet gilt. Als „neue“ Sprachgrenze zwischen Ober- und Mitteldeutsch wird heute allgemein die Speyerer Linie (Appel/Apfel-Linie) angesehen.
In den allermeisten mittel- und oberdeutschen Varietäten ist die zweite hochdeutsche Lautverschiebung nur teilweise durchgeführt, so auch in den ostmitteldeutschen Varietäten, die zu einem großen Teil zur Herausbildung der Standardsprache beigetragen haben. Das Mittel- und Oberdeutsche variiert dabei vom Hoch- und Höchstalemannischen sowie dem bairischen Tirolerischen, die als einzige Varietäten die zweite deutsche Lautverschiebung vollständig durchgeführt haben, bis hin zu Ostbergisch und Mölmsch, wo allein das Wort ik zu ich (siehe auch Uerdinger Linie = äußerste Nordgrenze des Mitteldeutschen) verschoben ist. Im Allgemeinen wird jedoch die „Benrather Linie“ (maken/machen) als Nordgrenze der hochdeutschen Varietäten angesehen
Als Niederdeutsch werden diejenigen Varietäten bezeichnet, in denen die zweite bzw. hochdeutsche Lautverschiebung nicht oder nur zu einem geringen Teil vollzogen worden ist. Das Niederdeutsche im eigentlichen Sinne (Niedersächsisch und Ostniederdeutsch) stammt vom Altsächsischen ab und wird in Norddeutschland und im Nordosten der Niederlande (dort unter der Bezeichnung „nedersaksisch“) gesprochen. Das Niederdeutsche hat im Rahmen der Sprachencharta des Europarats in Deutschland und den Niederlanden einen offiziellen Status als Regionalsprache erhalten. Zuvor hatten die deutschen Länder Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Bremen Niederdeutsch für einen Schutz gemäß Teil III der Sprachencharta angemeldet.
Die niederrheinischen Varietäten des Niederfränkischen am deutschen Niederrhein haben ebenso wie die niederdeutschen Mundarten im eigentlichen Sinne die zweite bzw. hochdeutsche Lautverschiebung nicht oder nur zu einem geringen Teil vollzogen. Sie sind jedoch sprachtypologisch enger mit den angrenzenden niederländischen Mundarten als mit den benachbarten deutschen verwandt. Ihre Zuordnung zum Niederdeutschen ist daher umstritten[20]. Sie gehen ebenso wie das Niederländische auf das Altniederfränkische (Altniederländische) zurück.
Die Mundarten des Gebietes zwischen der Uerdinger Linie (ik-/ich-Linie) und der Benrather Linie (maken-/machen-Linie) (Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, Neuss) weisen sowohl niederfränkische als auch mittelfränkische Züge auf und sind ein mundartliches Übergangsgebiet zwischen den mitteldeutschen-mittelfränkischen und den niederfränkischen Mundarten.
Die Mundarten (Dialekte) im niederdeutschen Sprachraum werden zumeist umgangssprachlich als „Platt“ oder „Plattdeutsch“ (Plattdüütsch) bezeichnet.
