I mean... Confused

I didn't know that. But it seems that HYF being Rush's poppiest effort, it's easy pickings for hate I guess.

There's just differences in opinions. I like Vapor Trails over both Test for Echo and Snakes and Arrows, though I wouldn't say it's a "return to form". I do prefer Hold Your Fire over those three.

My problem with VT has always been that I find the tracks are barely distinguishable from each other; similar tempo and bizarrely devoid of memorable tunes... it's just a monotonous, uninspired mess..

Vapor Trails is my least favorite Rush album. I still try every so often but other than one little victory maybe it doesn't do much for me.

Yep. And while TFE was definitely the beginning of that sound I still find most of the tracks to be at least somewhat melodic and enjoyable whereas with VT that's not the case (and I have the remastered version). S&A is only a little better than VT. The opening track and the instrumentals save it but most of the others are mostly forgettable imo (I'll listen to the album then forget most of what I just heard). I've always enjoyed HYF for the most part.

Yes! That's exactly what happens to me! It's so samey that, despite my best initial efforts to concentrate on each track, it all blurs into one indefinable sound, that I'm at the end of the album an hour later and have no idea what I've really just heard. I never seem to know what track I'm on or how far through the album I am, without looking at the cover, whereas with Counterparts and even TfE, each track is so easily identifiable from the others....

Yep. TFE is kind of like that too to a degree but it's still better. I'm not saying TFE is one of Rush's best albums but at least it kind of grows on you which is something that VT hasn't done (and probably won't). However, some people really like VT so go figure. Personal taste is a funny thing that way.
