Wakefield tied the Tigers in knots with that stupid pitch and they were screwed up for the next 3 days afterwards. I think that it is all about timing. These guys are so geared towards 95 mile an hour fastballs, a 60 mile pitch with movement totally messes with their timing. |
Like I said he USED to just own the Yanks, but the last few years they've hit quite well against him. The announcers were even saying the key is to swing when it's looking high. You never know with the knuckleball...but it seems true. The Yanks get alot of hits off it when it floats high. And he does pitch it so slow you can really smash it. Also, it can be out of control. I remember some games were in ONE inning he'd give up like 4 hits, 3 walks, and a few hit batters. It can be effective, I just don't see the point of the knuckleball. I guess he does burn other teams, maybe it's because the Yanks see him more, but you can hit wakefield really easily.

I want to say that a couple of years ago the Tigers hit 5 home runs off of him in a game but they were all solo shots and they were the only hits that they got. The Tigers ended up losing that game and are in the record books for most home runs in a 9 inning game in a loss.

Effective knuckleballers are rare, but guys like Hough, Wilhelm, both Niekro's, and Wakefield do certainly earn their pay. It's not that difficult to throw a knuckleball that moves a lot, but it is quite rare that a guy can actually control it enough to not walk every batter they face; there's a reason that Wakefield and R.A. Dickey (Twins long reliever) are the only knuckleballers in the MLB right now. But Wakefield absolutely has been an effective pitcher his entire career. Wang had some tough luck today. A couple of ground ball singles and a ground-rule double resulting from a total butchering of a fly ball by Swisher caused a lot of the damage today, and he actually punched a couple of guys out on some pretty filthy sliders. He's making progress, but he's still walking WAY too many.

Like I said, it works fine but if I ran a team...don't expect me to pick up a knuckleballer.
And I don't know what's up. Out of the bullpen Wang was pitching fine, he seemed up to speed. I don't know whats wrong with him....hopefully he'll get it straight soon. 2 consecutive 19 win years, we need that Wang back.
And Swisher had 2 big gaffes (while I was watching at least).
I guess all that matters is the L they got again to the Sahx....

We got our Verlander back this year. Complete game 2 to 1 victory over the White Sox. Only run was a home run by Jim Thome, who has 58 career home runs against the Tigers and 7 against Verlander. Verlander struck him out in the 9th inning however to get the save to go along with his win.

Yea, Verlander is a beast. Here's to hoping the Yanks can get a win against the sahx tonight. I'm also glad to see some true baseball fans here. My friend has been pissing me off, always thought he was a true fan but the last few years I've noticed he dosn't even WATCH the Yanks, just complains when they lose.  When I finally called him out he said he would watch...but he has no idea lol. Just texted me saying "ahhh Sebatha (yea spelled that way) pitching finally I see?" Then went on a few text long rant about how they were leading the AL EAST just to lost it to the Red Sox, now they have to win just to get back to were they were. I just told him Sabathia has pitched all year dipsh*t and yea thats baseball for ya, when you go lose you go behind LOL. OK rant done, I just hate people who call themsleves fans but don't watch, or give up/root for the team on how good they're doing. EDIT: Almost as much as I'm hating Nick Swisher. Bad enough he's not really hitting, but just made another idiotic baserunning play...

That was painful. CC pitched 7 innings with just one mistake. The Yanks make a good comeback and have a slim, but somewhat comfortable lead.
CC just barely slips up and it's all gone.
And damn I hate that Papelbon. He's like Rivera in his prime, when he's up you might as well just give up. I mean the guy is pure shutdown pitcher.

Ahhhhh inter-league play.
I believe the Yanks have the best record against other conference teams. Hope they keep it up against the Mets

Lots of firsts vs firsts I notice. Should be a good weekend. Wish I was going to be around to see any of it. 
Amber related activities take precedence. Hopefully can watch the Lakers finish off the Magic Sunday.

I'm listening right now on AM radio to the "subway series" in NYC. That means there are two broadcasts, one from each team. And who's broadcast do you think I'm listening to? Why, the Mets' of course. What a relief it is to listen to the Yanks without needing to sift through their abominable broadcast. I can no longer take that horrible John Sterling. Holy smokes does that man need to retire! I expect one of his last on-air blunders to go something like this: "It's going to be a 3-0, and the pitch... hit hard toward left, it is high, it is far, it, is... caught by the catcher in foul territory. You know Susan it's hard to see from up here...". Don't expect any comments on this, just had to vent.

Eh, I guess it;s in my blood as a Yankee fan..its tough to say anything against John Sterling. I wish I could say that about the game! Listening on the radio while out on a drive, Mets went up 2-1 WITHOUT a hit. Joba walked 3 and hit 2....  By the end of 4 he was at 100 pitches. Ugh....

WHAT A FINISH! I'm glad to see my faith in the Mets still holds true. Faith that, the Mets will ALWAYS screw it up. 9th inning, 2 outs Mets up by 1 run. The Yanks have 2 one base when A-rod hits a pop up, and Im about ready to say f*cking A-rod did it again, when the fielder DROPS IT! Yanks win.  That's the Mets for ya

What an epic fail. I hope A-rod dosn't get credit for this though...I mean if it wasn't for a 1 out of 500 accident that was game over... In fact Teixeira deserves the credit, I mean he scored all the wayfrom first. Considering it was just a pop he could've dogged it like most do, but he ran straight from the start. Oh, and Evolutionary don't sweat it. My dad and I are hardcore Yankee/Giant fans (I dont follow hockey but he likes the Rangers). Somehow my younger brother is an Eagles/Colorado Avalanche and......Red Sox fan.  I think he does it on purpose

Ah.. The only "local" team I'm a fan of is the Rams in the NFL, who are now in St. Louis so...  and you can call me Luke btw. Being called Evolutionary is weird.

Ah yes, well I am always glad to see a Yankee fan outside the area. And fear not, my #2 NFL team is the Rams. Don't know why, just always liked them. And alright Luke, but evolutionary sounds so futuristic! Feel free to call me JJ. If I cant really be Finnish I can pretend to be one.

What'd I tell ya?! Un-freaking-believable! The panoply of emotions-       (and then I'd need an emoticon for, "shrug").
It's weird for me because I'm not the typical 'fan'. I grew up on Long
Island (moved to NYC in 91) with no real interest in sports, though I
did kind of like baseball and would sometimes watch a game. I was all
about music. So I grew up with no strong affiliation for either NY
team. I think that childhood rooting for a team is what usually makes
for what we call real "fandom" in adults. I learned later in life to
love the game of baseball - the rules, the parks and traditions, the
architecture of the entire concept is just great (btw, I don't care for
any of the other sports and don't follow them that's just me). It
seems to me that if you get into a thing later in life, you will
probably not develop that "unreasoning" aspect that goes with truly
being fan of a team. So, though I have a strong feeling of affiliation
with things New York ( that is unreasoning in me, as I've been
here all my life), I did not end up with an either/or take in terms of
my feelings toward the Yankees or the Mets. Yet I don't think I'm a
'fraud' for that - I'm a baseball fan first (I'll sit and score a game
sometimes, etc.).
I will say however that, in these head-to-head match ups, I think I root a just a little bit more
for the Mets; I find myself doing this perhaps for two reasons: one, my
father, deceased over ten years now, was a Dodger-converterted-to-Mets
fan, and two, they're typically the underdog. (It's certainly not because
they're a sensible, admirable organization!) Anyway, my emotional
state during and after an affair such as last night's is... hard to
describe.
