I will be uploading goodies from a number of samples this week..the first today is

< name=update =gnosearch.cgi method=post>
Luna Park Ensemble Mushi-kui Mandala

I learned of this Japanese band because Tom Cora did some stuff w/ them that was included in the comp Tzadik did as a memorial to him [Hallelujah, Anyway: Remembering Tom Cora]..finally found a cdr, but the titles are in Japanese so i can't help there.  They are also on the Frith assembled comp from the 80s called 'Welcome to Dreamland" [pretty much jpn noise bands, but some very hip stuff/if any one's interested let me know as i burned the lp]

This cd is a comp of their 2 lps/eps [?] from '98 - recorded between 82-89. The band members:
  • Wataru Okuma - guitar, piano, toy piano, ukulele, glockenspiel, voice
  • Rolie - xylophone, voice
  • Hideo Tokioka - alto saxophone
  • Tetsuto Koyama - bass, chorus
  • Masahiro Minowa - drums, singing bowls, chorus
  • Terry Arai - chorus
  • [recognize anything..?]

has been described as "Japanese RIO-ish"

just came back from the 'Symforce' festival in Tilburg....they did some bargain on older 'Musea' releases and I bought some....

    'Univeria Zekt' : 'the nameless'
(quite nice, the softer side of 'Magma' , lots of different atmos, very good sound quality and a good inside story from Francis Moze, the bass player, in the liner notes, first I thought it was out of print , but apparently it isn't)

Shub-Niggurath : 'Les Morts vont vite'
excellent!! one of the most interesting Zeuhl records so far for me , reminds me a lot 'Present' with the heavy bass ponctuations, this one seems out of print according to the Musea catalogue

    Shub-Niggurath : 'C'étaient des très  grands vents'
less accesible, more experimental  but far less rock too ,nearly abstract, going into the direction of 'musique concrete', great record so even if I won't listen to it often...

and thanx to Claire who send me 'Rahmann' (same) ,
that I listened to on the way back, the way Mc Laughlin combines Indian music and Jazz Rock, M. Hadi combines North African music and Jazz Rock, influences by Al Di Meola,(the spanish/arabian side)  Mahavishnu and Magma, great record!! I am trying to get his live record he released under the project  name 'Mad Sheer Kahn'....

    BTW  Claire,
I didn't found the 'Rahmann' CD on the Musea stand....

I just discovered the bands Sotos and Zaar (who are both excellent by the way), and so I went back and re-listened to Univers Zero and Art Zoyd.  I realized that I never really looked very deeply into chamber-prog.  Can you guys suggest some good chamber-prog?

All are excellent.  I don't think I know the latter of the two Shub Niggurath albums though.

I have Rahmann, but have yet to give it a listen.  I plan to do so soon.

    Univers Zero
    Present
    Early Art Zoyd
    Shub-Niggurath (amazing stuff!)
Ahvak (a fantastic band, one of the best Chamber Prog albums ever made, in my opinion - Dave Kerman guests on drums)
    Cro Magnon
    NeBeLNeST
    Far Corner

I love Sotos and Zaar too.

    And for something slightly different:

    Alamaailman Vasarat

I wouldn't call NeBeLNeST chamber prog.  I would call them AWESOME, though.

I'll check out Present, Ahvak, Far Corner, and Alamaailman Vasarat.

Alamaailman Vasarat aren't really chamber prog, although they have chamber prog aesthetics.

    They're what I call b*****dized chamber klezmer.

Far Corner are similar to NeBeLNeST.

Yes, it's quite good, I'm very enthusiastic about it as well.
RAIG is the label by the way.

I'll repeat some and add some, but no point in repeating UZ et al.:

    Amygdala
    Lacrymosa
    ZYPRESSEN - Read Ruben's review
DAAU - their two first and their last albums
YUGEN - not the small ensemble of chamber music but an enlarged and very rich sounding. Read Syzygy's or my review.
    VOLAPÜK - fantastic, especially Polyglot
SALLE GAVEAU - not exactly it, but think Tango and the 1920's music in Paris salons...
ROZ VITALIS - again, not exactly it, but related.
RATIONAL DIET - more avant-garde but this is as related as Yugen is.
OLIVE MESS - again, related but not it.

There are more related and influenced or incorporating it but I don't want to drift away too much. If I remember anything else, I'll repost.

Ah yes, Lacrymosa and Zypressen are excellent, I forgot about them.

Cartoon and PFS also dabble a bit in Chamber Prog.

    Also try:

    Fukkeduk
    Gatto Marte
    Julverne
    Miriodor
    Pocket Orchestra
    Salle Gaveau
    Wapassou
    X-Legged Sally

Not forgetting yet to be added Katzen Kapell.

Not sure, I found them a tad boring, to be honest.  Try the debut.
