Deadly Code

Saga of a Siberian crime family battling Russian forces in the 1980s and 90s with patriarch John Malkovich teaching his grandson how to be an 'honest criminal'.   Not bad but could've been better, though I applaud Malkovich's continued interest in making small films.

Being There

One of the most interesting and boring films in pop movie history, Peter Sellers is a simpleminded gardener thrown into Washington society, mistaken for a genius and later a Christ figure in this 1979 adaption of the Jerzy Kosinsky book beautifully photographed in a soft grey palette.

Anti Christ (2013) directed by Lars Von Trier

Danish arthouse horror starring the talking stick insect (Willem Defoe) and that Patti Smith glove puppet (Charlotte Gainsbourg) Pretentious in the extreme, the abattoir of mirth in which Von Trier places a couple grieving the accidental death of their child, never even approaches 'glacial' in terms of pace or energy. Gainsbourg manages to make Buster Keaton look overwrought while Defoe continues to burn calories even while staring mournfully into space. It looks terrific but probably so does Von Trier's wedding vid. Solipsistic and manipulative chicanery. of the worst kind which is carefully and knowingly calculated to attract and provoke controversy in lieu of actual content (and no, no-one knows why it's called Anti-Christ or why a talking fox appears more convincing than the human actors) Had it explored more fully the subject matter of the Gainsbourg character's thesis in progress (witch hunts and the misogyny that led to gynocide/inquisition) things may have been considerably better Thumbs Down

I didn't mind Antichrist, but your description of Charlotte Gainsbourg as "that Patti Smith glove puppet" is the funniest thing I've seen all week. So I'm not the only person who sees the physical resemblance between the two...

Django Unchained

Decent but over the top Tarantino western with plenty of violence and blood.

The Hangover Part 2 (2011) directed by Todd Phillips

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results will never qualify as insanity if you gross $580 million at the box office doing so. It's exactly the same structure as the first film apart from the dawning realisation that it's real hard to reproduce the fun, freshness and winning chemistry of the original. Cooper, Helms and Bartha behave like lab rats who could negotiate their way around this same maze blindfold while Galifiankis completely overshoots his reprise of the slightly creepy idiot savant Alan by turning him into a needlessly camp ADD toddler. That a cute chain smoking capuchin monkey conspires to upstage the entire cast should tell you all you need to know. Yes, there are some very funny moments but these are way too far apart. I notice there is a (gulp) third helping of these reheated leftovers available. A pale imitation of the original and a baffling exception to the law of diminishing returnsThumbs Down

Martyrs (2008) Directed by Pascal Laugier

Pivotal in the development of the New French Extremity movement, Martyrs is a deeply disquieting and thought provoking story that ultimately poses more questions than it offers satisfactory conclusions. Often brutally violent and unflinchingly visceral, it nevertheless shouldn't be mistaken as belonging to the voyeuristic rump of gratuitous torture porn that litters our contemporary mindset, as it has much more to offer than the latter's pitiful sadism by proxy. It's refreshing that Laugier has cast two very strong female lead roles in his film and there is no equivalent leading male protagonist in the entire undertaking. (Even the hideous monster of the ID made flesh by Lucie's deranged hallucinations is unequivocally female so we can discard the feminism ticket entirely chaps)
A story about human suffering, mental illness as a survival mechanism, kindness, guilt, friendship, love, forgiveness, revenge (and some weird s.h.i.t. about a secret organisation - headed by an elderly female  - who wish to glimpse the afterlife via the testimonies of those they have systematically tortured to the point of transcendence i.e. young female martyrs) It's much better and more credible than my my glib analysis would suggest and I would recommend it unhesitatingly as one of those movies that lives long in the memory after the credits roll.Thumbs Up
I also fell hopelessly in love with one of the main characters (Anna played by the delectable Morjana Alaoui) but be warned that her pretty face is practically all that's left of her by the end.Confused

It's interesting how France has taken over Japan's position as the country that makes all the most disturbing and violent horror films. On the other hand it's not so surprising considering they're the culture that gave the world Comte de Lautreamont, Octave Mirbeau, Georges Bataille and Louis-Ferdinand Céline.

The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008) Directed by Uli Edel

This is both fascinating and brilliant (and bloody long) BUT comes with a caveat i.e. to appreciate this to the full it might be best to investigate some of the political and social events that proved pivotal to this tale of disaffected youth post WW2. Say what you like about the futility of resistance to the emerging military industrial complex, but there were left wing militant activists in West Germany, Japan and Italy (the axis powers, go figure) around this time, motivated enough to blow your porcine brains out if they considered you culpable in perpetrating the imperialistic/capitalist war machine. For the sake of clarity I abhor the deeds of the Red Army Faction but have always admired and respected their activist conscience as represented by Ulrike Meinhof, a mother of two and journalist who, when faced with the ineffectiveness of their heinous actions, acceded to the conclusion that there was no sine qua non to which sacrificing her children was worthy. I loved this movie as it presents many sides of a complex equation fairly and without spurious piety and although the German state is portrayed as the ultimate victor, the movie shows us that the far left and far right are not at opposite ends of a straight line but closer to the extremities of a horse shoe. The political landscape in Europe has never been the same since the protests of 1968 and despite the prevalent ideologies having now been outed as morally bankrupt, we should be grateful that what drives decent and intelligent people to commit atrocities in the name of 'commitment' has been relegated to the furthest reaches of the mental health profession.

Footnote: the policeman who was twice acquitted for the unlawful killing of unarmed student protestor Ohnesorg (which attracted mass demonstrations, outrage from the left and triggers the plot of this movie) turned out to be an East German spy working for the Stasi and a member of the Communist party. The movie makes great use of many such astonishing ironies throughout. One such not covered however, is that the RAF's lawyer Horst Mahler despite his avowed professional impartiality, was fully supportive of  left wing militarism but is currently in prison for being a neo nazi who denies the holocaust Confused

The Depraved

A group of students does some urban exploring in tunnels underneath Berlin. Of course, this go awry and soon they are lost and come across an old deranged ex-east german boarder patrolman and chaos and pain ensue. Decent, yet predictable. Points go to the man who played the villain...excellently done and it was wonderful to the hear deep menacing German.

The Damned United (2009) Directed by Tom Hooper

I can't think of a single decent footy film since the big bang, so didn't extend much hope for this effort but big surprise is that it's mostly bloody good and occasionally brilliant. Michael Sheen does an uncanny impersonation of the 'Teesside Mohammed Ali' and Colm Meaney's portrayal of Don Revie is one of the stealthiest and subtle pieces of character assassination I've seen in a long while. Timothy Spall is less convincing as Cloughie's right hand man Peter Taylor but I suspect that this has little to do with his performance but a lack of nous re football culture circa the mid 70's in England. Brian Clough bucked many a trend in the ailing British game during his career: he produced teams filled mainly with individuals of modest technical ability and made them the champions of England (Derby County) and Europe (Nottingham Forest, twice) - he was his own self publicist, spin doctor and snake oil pusher to a gauche media he turned into stupefied addicts. (Jose Mourinho practically owes the man's estate royalty payments) Such ostentatious self confidence cuts to the quick with the Brits who are usually oblivious to their crippling peg deficit when they conspire to bring their high achievers 'down a peg or two'
Clough was brilliant at what he did, knew it and let everyone else know it. (Why the hell didn't he have the savvy to go abroad where he would have been more appreciated and his descent into alcoholism may have been forestalled?) This movie succeeds because what was a deeply personal and increasingly obsessive conflict for Clough re his comparative success with that of Don Revie's Leeds Utd  team, never resorts to any hero/villain dichotomy and both men's darker failings and flaws are laid bare. The least successful aspect of the film are the interactions with the players, who are never allowed to amount to anything more than cartoon approximations of unconvincing hairpieces, yes boss and zealous pawns in a muddied parody of  tactical thuggery.
'The best manager that England never had' is a tad disingenuous epithet for Brian Clough, as both he and the FA knew that the cosseted and pampered players he would have told to 'throw all your medals in the dustbin because they were won by cheating', would not have tolerated the rhetoric of perhaps the only man who was capable of delivering a world cup to a nation richly undeserving of same. (Wish he's managed Scotland, even if it was just to spite the English FAEvil Smile)

Taxidermia (2006) Directed by Gyorgy Palfi.

Difficult what to make of this Hungarian effort which is neither conclusively comedy, satire or horror. Purportedly a tripartite metaphor outlining the defining stages of Hungary's social development from WW2 onwards, the movie is actually a lot more fun, frustrating and disturbing than such a dry description would lead you to believe. It starts with a lowly army private who is bullied and oppressed by his commanding officer which somehow leads him to masturbate excessively and set fire to his resultant ejaculations by way of escapist release (no I'm not making this up) A convoluted and circuitous karma leads our humble squaddie to impregnating the officer's wife (don't ask) and is executed for his trouble. The resultant child grows up to become a Soviet bloc speed eating champion whose claim to fame is having a vomiting technique named after him (yes, things take a gross turn hereabouts) This section works extremely well as a thinly veiled parody of the hideous ironies and baffling inequities that arose behind the iron curtain in the name of communist ideology. Take a deep breathe for the third and final section and don't watch this on a full stomach....son of speed eating champion is a skinny and lonely taxidermist who has to care for his ailing father (by now a hideously and morbidly obese blubber mountain who cannot move from his apartment and feeds his numerous cats on lard to fatten them up)  Father and son squabble, son abandons father to fend for himself. Cats eat father alive. Son stuffs father professionally and starts to practice his discipline on himself, injecting copious amounts of pain killers to enable him to stuff his own body before decapitation by specially rigged up mechanical device.(If you've reached this far, kudos for your fortitude)
There are moments of genuine pathos, charm and humor in this bizarre tale but I couldn't recommend this to anyone unless you have an affinity for that strain of comedy that emerges for peoples forced to live under regimes where dissent punishable by death manifests itself as dead-pan slapstick. I'm glad and grateful to have been born in the west.Thumbs Down

Hollywood Ending

Woody as a has-been director who finally lands a worthy project but has to work with his ex-wife and as if that weren't enough, suddenly and unaccountably goes blind (a case of "hysterical blindness") during the shooting of the film.   Equally funny and caustic, anyone who's had to work for ~ or with ~ an ex will identify with the story and laugh out loud frequently.   Nice one from his later period.

Manhattan Murder Mystery

High-energy romp with Allen and Keaton at their bickering best, a tight, fun, suspenseful script, and a great supporting cast running around NYC trying to trip-up a killer.
