Could somebody please describe the sound of Meshuggah for me please?
I was in my local metal club on Saturday and some excellent drum-heavy metal tune came on and it was also about 7 or so minutes in length... I was curious if it was indeed Meshuggah? Instrumental too, I think.
Oh and I even quite liked an Atreyu track... shoot me!

Meshuggah is completely atonal and completely lacking of melody. The guitars, drums, and instruments are all very mechanic, crunching, and switch time signatures almost every bar on most occasions. The vocals are accentuated and "screaming" almost.

It sort of sounded like that except it didn't really change that much. Kind of Yoshi style drumming... I mean, in terms of intensity. The drums were the main instrument. Kind of tribal but not and I don't remember vocals of any kind.

As Alex mentioned, atonal/dissonant as hell, very extreme metal. Lots of poly rhythms, hyper technical guitar (mainly rhythm anyway, lead guitar is not a big focus of the band), Holdsworth-esque solos. Vocal style, similar to hardcore shouting. Use of 7 and 8 string guitars and the rhythm sound is pretty crushing. I hated the band for about 3 years. I now love them And no James, Atreyu is complete utter suck. No offense, but geezus, they really suck.

I agree, Atreyu is pretty awful. Meshuggah, on the other hand, is my favorite metal band.

Well, the drums are not 'the main instrument' per se in Meshuggah. Rhythmically, the rhythm guitar is of equal importance in the band too, so perhaps you heard another band instead.
