I would associate English football with Lucian Freud - powerful yet kinda dry:

WC 90 was the last tournament where I've seem romantic football played - Holland, England, Cameroon are the brightest examples. Even Germany was different to what was to become.

When I "calculate" the enjoyment I get from a WC, the performances of my favourite teams don't count; that's why I think I have a more objective view.

I was going to ask you what was romantic football. Talking about Cameroon look at this:

If that's romantic guess I ' ll never try to fall in love from now onLOL

^ So we see a very talented player being faulted everytime, everywhere by his defending opponents - what's new about that? That's how it always been.

Yeah, it looks peculiar doesn't it? That's exactly what I think, this kind of approach is now part of the past. They do it a lot more professional these days. LOL

Violence was also a part of "romantic football" - I can't say I miss it.

Yeah, nice Ouch video... LOL I was preparing to say that the ugliest foul ever was that made by Germany's goalkeeper to France's attacker in the 1986 semi-final, but then I saw the video and it was right up at No.1.

Like I was saying, there's quite a big difference between the way they were doing it back then and now. During the so called "romantic era" they were cynically hunting down the adversaries. Today, the ugliest fouls come from excessively powerful tackles. With some exceptions of course: Keane, wtf?

Perhaps one of the most welcome changes in the laws was that of banning the 'tackle from behind' which must have robbed the game of so many great talents in their prime while it went unpunished.

The worst foul I ever saw is this one:

performed on Polish defender Marcin Wasilewski this year... Ouch

I was watching some the Tennis Masters Cup today and I thought : What if the best national teams make an annual league with home-away matches? I mean It works fine with rugby , six and three (now fourBig smile) Nations is played every year and it's one hell of a tournament.

Lets suppose we take world class teams only:

  • The World Champions: Argentina , Brasil , Uruguay , England , Italy , Germany and France

And you could put other teams like  Netherlands ,Spain , Portugal and Mexico. Suming up you will have 20 matches a year for every team. Instead of playing boring friendly matches FIFA could earn big bucks and make a more interesting competition than the World Cup.

To get rid of meaningless friendlies it's certainly not a bad idea but Spain and Netherlands are closer to world class than either Uruguay or England. (even Germany are borderline)

Maybe a further development of the Confederations Cup would be a good idea?

This is the worst foul I remember.

Perú had to play with Argentina, and Franco Navarro, Peruvian scorer in Argentoina had to be stoped.

So Bilardo (If I'm not wrong) placed Camino, an unknown butcher with the only mission of breaking Franco, in the second or third minute happened this:

The referee Arpifilho (Who allowed an ilegal goal of Argentine in minute 83 that let us out with a 2 - 2 tie), only gave him yellow card....Camino was changed in the first period, Navaro left the field and stayed 8 month outside the field, his career was over.

Yep, truly a pre meditated act of wanton thuggery.

BTW given that you are a lawyer Ivan, do you think that players whose careers are ended in such a fashion should be able to sue the perpetrator for financial compensation ? (I would think this just, but it would certainly open up a whole can of worms)

Yes, the image of the fracture and the leg going backwards is terrible.

I believe YES.

The problem is that FIFA will never alloiw it, but in our code "A person who intentionally causes a damage to other, has to pay an indemnization", so if you go to the courts, most surely a judge will order that person to pay.

Think in this, you are a cab driver, if a drunk pilot breaks your legs and you can't drive, he must pay, because he's depraving you of your food source....Why not a player who receives an INTENTIONAL and CRIMINAL kick that destroys his career should not be paid?

I remember a case long ago. All the players of a team following the example of "Los Pincharratas" (Estudiantes de la Plata with Bilardo) had pins in their shirts, and when a rival jumped, this criminals took the pins and stuck them in their ribs.

FIFA made nothing, but a penal court decided that this was a minor attack with a weapon and sent two Peruvian players to jail for some months.

El Clasico is starting in a couple of minutes... I say Barcelona wins this two goals ahead, but I can't be more specific. Let the best team win! Big smile

There's no way I can see La Liga in England - I don't even have Sky. If I'm in Mallorca at the right time i go to games and have been lots of times but guess the two games you can't get tickets for - yes, you're right, Barca and MadridCry  (I've seen Atletico twice, Valencia, Sevilla and many others though)
