^ You must be one of the few Tangerine Dream fans who's "lucky" enough to have the Three O'clock High soundtrack in their collection, considering I'd never heard of the soundtrack or movie until today.

I own all twelve of the classic Virgin albums in two box sets (but not including the Sorcerer or Thief soundtracks). Now, I just need to keep a look-out for my two recent favourites on CD: Legend & Tyger.

I first owned it on cassette. ![]() The CD was hard to find for a while. If you see one, and it's priced reasonably, grab it. It will probably never be reissued.

![]() It's getting Near Dark, so best close the curtains, lock the doors and keep the lights on all night, because you never know when there might be a band of psychotic vampires lurking about. Near Dark is Tangerine Dream's 32nd album overall and their 10th soundtrack. The movie is a neo-western horror about a bunch of vampires who invade a small mid-western town and generally raise merry hell. Near Dark was even more horrific for director Kathryn Bigelow though, as this was her directorial debut and turned out to be an expensive box office flop, costing $5 million to make and only returning $3.4 million at the box office. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 25 2022 at 14:37 |

^Regarded by the majority of TD fans as one of their top film scores. '80s classic! A lot of good/great films don't break the bank. I like all of Bigelow's films. She's very good at what she does.

![]() Shy People is Tangerine Dream's 33rd album overall and their 11th soundtrack. The movie stars Barbara Hershey and Jill Clayburgh. The little-known soundtrack is one of Tangerine Dream's best in my view and features three memorable songs too, so don't be shy, give it a try. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 25 2022 at 23:28 |

^Most fans view Shy People as a mixed bag. Personally, I've always liked it. I like the three songs. The gloomy instrumentals are thick with atmosphere.
The 2016 Dragon's Dream remaster adds three previously unreleased instrumentals: "Swamp," "Nature," and "Going to Town," which is an instrumental version of "The Harbor."

I'd love to get hold of all of the Tangerine Dream soundtrack movies on DVD, and that includes Three O'clock High too. ![]() I've watched three of them recently on YouTube:- Sorcerer; Wavelength; & Flashpoint; and tonight I'll add Shy People to the list too.

Not to worry. I'll be taking an Epic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway here soon with Christopher Franke, where I'll be sure to encounter some Enchanting Nature Over the Pacific Blue ocean where the Raven flies, and including a stop-off at the Babylon 5 bar & grill along the way. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 26 2022 at 11:42 |

Had to catch up on 111 posts. Barmy although there were a lot of off topic debating going on.
Underwater Sunlight is their last masterpiece for quite a long time imo. After that Tyger is interesting but just doesn't gel overall and Live Miles was my 'sleep' album for a long time.

Yes, sometimes the discussion has been free-ranging - a bit like a carton of eggs - but I'd be the last person to complain about off-topic-ness, given my past record for straying off the subject of discussion. ![]() When you say LiveMiles was your "sleep" album for a long time, I hope that's in a good way and not because you found the album soporific to listen to.

It's 1988 and we've reached a transitional stage in "Untangling the Tangram" of Tangerine Dream's labyrinthine discography. Not only was 1988 the year when Chris Franke departed the trio, but it's also the year that marked the end of "The Blue Years" on the Jiive Electro label and the beginning of "The Melrose Years" on the Private Music label, so with that in mind, this seems like the ideal time for an update on the 34 albums featured here so far. Yes, 34 albums overall and we haven't even reached the end of the 1980's yet.

Having already featured the solo works of Edgar Froese, Peter Baumann & Johannes Schmoelling, now seems like an opportune moment to list all of Christopher Franke's solo albums too, although that doesn't include his numerous Babylon 5 soundtracks, as they would take almost as long to itemise as Tangerine Dream's entire discography.

^ The Calling soundtrack isn't currently available on YouTube and I gave up listing Chris Franke's Babylon 5 soundtracks when I realised there's over fifty of them. If you want to have a listen to some of the many Babylon 5 soundtracks though, you could check out the abbreviated 5-hour playlist on YouTube.

"Livemiles Part I" is a new studio creation; the music is fabulous. They should've released another longform piece, or two more, for Side B, under another title. In fact, they did have another longform piece, the one Edgar and Chris recorded after Johannes left and eventually released on the Dream Roots collection: "Valley of the Sun." "Livemiles Part II" is an extract from the West Berlin concert that was Franke's final appearance with the band. Afterward, he departed and took half of all the gear they used with him. They should have released the whole show, unabridged, because it's excellent.

The Lost Tales is a full-length album with artwork. Those other Babylon 5 things are CD EPs. I wouldn't bother with them, either.
