^ Such explanation puzzles me even more, because I think IPs change everytime you restart your modem, isn't that so ?
Every other day you'll have a new different IP with no (?) connection with the former. |

^ Can't really argue, maybe it's as you say - or eventually not the same behavior for every ISP/country/contract ?

Mostly what i know about ips is that you can often find someone's location by looking up their ip number, but I know there are also ways of getting around that.

Somehow IP addresses are assigned to a location. I am not an expert in this field, but IP-addresses can be located by using a database. I think there may be some registration relating bundles of IP-addresses to companies who own them - and their locations. Formerly, there was a reference to the service that PA used to locate IP addresses. It could be found on the home page or the forum home page, but I cannot find it anymore. It was an outfit called MaxMind. The site still exists. Here you can play with it, up to 25 IP-addresses a day.

My understanding is that the address in itself has certain digits specific to the country, others to the ISP and finally the random ones attributed to every customer everytime he connects to the net (unless you contracted a fixed IP, which you have to when for example hosting a site - and pay much more).
Not an expert, though, I might be missing something |

^ Each country has their own IP ranges, but you can't tell the country (or the ISP) just by looking at one set of digits.

An interesting thing happened today...I got my first Captcha in some time, and when it said for me to click on the `I am not a robot' bit, it simply let me through without needing to verify anything.
So good news, it seems I've bonded with our robotic overlords and won their trust. Let's all build a better world together. |

No rhyme or reason to this, I think we have established that a good while back. People with clean harddisks get hit with captchas just as much as folks like myself who dabble in explosives and trout porn.
I have less problems over my phone, which is what I am using rtm, but it is extremely irritating to use. |
