Great news, thanks ! Another great news : the triple PFM Cd on BTF. Some unreleased tracks from 1972, it seems.

Here's the lead track off one of my favourite Italian progressive albums - Corte Del Miracoli:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIDgG_DUYog

I remember listening to it for the first time with a friend, and it blew our minds how in the first few seconds is what sounds like a very modern sounding drum-loop, sounded cutting edge, yet back from the 70's!

Listening to it at work right now!

So much variety in the keyboards and drum/percussion sound, total overload! Some nice psychedelic and spacey moments too!

My main interest in prog have been symphonic, psychedelic, and jazz/fusion. Would this PFM album be a good place to start and other suggestions?
Per Un Amico was my first RPI. (Not that I have much even now.) Highly recommended. A pretty much perfect album.

Such a hard question Jim, as the genre is so deep with so many favorite titles for everyone. PFM is a huge favorite of many people, though not me, I like more underground stuff. But you could start with any of those top titles on the RPI page and you will do well. They're all great!

Area is jazz/avant and very weird. PFM and Orme are prettier symphonic, Banco is more aggressive symphonic. Balletto di Bronzo is dark and weird. Bacio della Medusa is a newer band mixing hard rock with symph.

I really suck at advice because I like too much stuff, the question just stops me like a deer into headlights. Ya just dive in and take some chances. You'll miss sometimes, but you'll hit stuff you like even more! Endless great music around here! Enjoy. Big smileSax man

Thanks Finnforest and Infocat!
A new world just opened up!  Just downloaded (legal and paid) Per Un Amico, and half way through listening to this and it is beautiful on first listen.  I can't wait to see what else is out here in this genre.  It seems I have heard "Generale" before and the title track is great.  Thanks all for the suggestions and advice!

If you're into Symphonic then I'd advise Museo Rosenbach. It's very Moog-heavy and rocks my flipping socks off. Their album is highly rated so I'm guessing other people thought the same.
Love the moog and the sound seems to be up my alley, but I have not seen many choices at my regular download sites (iTunes/Amazon), but will keep searching...

FRANCO MARIA GIANNINI : AFFRESCO (1974).

One of the greatest singer song album of 70's RPI, released with musicians of QVL and Libra. Makes me think of Scott Walker in the late seventies. An unknown gem.

Nah ... And I made a mistake. It was Scott Walker in the late sixties. To my duck's ears, these two ones are cousins.

I bought my CD copy a few years ago, but there was only one on sale anywhere and it was £90. After a lot of debating whether or not to buy it I went for it and it was totally worth the expense.

... until I checked back a few months later and found people selling copies for £20.

Ah well. At least I have... my health?

Canterzeuhl, I'd at least defend it because you have an amazing album! Truly one of the best Italian releases!

When I first started getting into prog about twenty years ago, I paid $80 for a triple CD Pink Floyd bootleg that looked amazing - the back cover listed some of the longest running-time live versions of several of their best early 70's pieces. So I forked over the cash, and found when I listened to it that the source material was running extra slow, so THAT was why the tracks were so long! In other words, it was unlistenable.

A total waste of cash!

Thanks, HG, I'll give this a listen!

I do have the stunning vinyl copy of their more recent album from 2010 called `Il Pittore Volante', lots of variety on it, and I was really quite impressed with it! Anyone else heard it?

I don't regret getting the album one bit, I just look back and think if I'd waited a few more months I could've saved some money and bought some other sweet music

Ouch! I've spent a lot of money on CD's and records in my few years as a prog-fan but I've never had that misfortune!
Closest I get is I bought a used copy of Frank Zappa's 'Yellowshark' and the case was scruffy.
I was really disappointed and it ruined the enjoyment of the album somewhat.

Nice album, very influenced by Yes (Time and a word, Fragile)  and ELP (The first ones). Yet this is to George Gershiwn that I think first and his jazz tinted with blues and broadway musicals.
