Maybe Winterthrough will grow on me, but now I found some its parts a little repetative.

It was tough to narrow down to six, they had some pretty good stuff there. Three of the ones I haven't heard before...can't wait

BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO — Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
Review by sinkadotentree (john davie) Prog Reviewer
4.5 stars. I much prefer this one to the follow up "Darwin!". This
debut from BANCO is maybe not as polished or complex as "Darwin!" yet
it's more accessible and for me more enjoyable.
"In Volo" is haunting to begin with until spoken words come in with
flute. This contrast continues. "R.I.P.(Requiescant In Pace)" is uptempo
right out of the gate.Vocals join in quickly, and they are amazing as
usual.It gets jazzy 1 1/2 minutes in.Excellent piano after 2
minutes.Vocals are back before 3 1/2 minutes.A calm before 4 minutes as
piano plays on.Great sound when drums and vocals join in.The most
emotional part of the record is 6 minutes in.An uptempo melody ends it.
"Passaggio" opens with the sound of someone walking along, then he sits
down and starts to play the harsichord and sing.He then stops, gets up
and walks away.Cool. "Metamorfosi" opens with pounding drums and
guitar. This rocks! Piano joins in.Great sound. It then calms down as
organ comes in powerfully.Piano then takes over.So wonderfully
played.Drums and a full sound before 3 minutes.Organ is back 4 minutes
in.The guitar and organ trade solos and check out the drumming! It
settles down again before some passionate guitar and drumming come in
around 8 1/2 minutes.Vocals follow.Nice. Piano and organ create some
magic as the drums pound. Some filthy organ joins in as well. "Il
Giardino Del Mago" opens with a dark mood.Drums and organ join in
briefly and then vocal melodies.Guitar, organ and drums lead the way 2
1/2 minutes in.It stops as that dark mood returns with piano and vocals
quietly playing. It's 5 1/2 minutes in when the tempo picks up with
vocals. This is such a great melody that stops 7 1/2 minutes in as it
gets dark again with piano. Vocals return 10 minutes in.It's uptempo
again before 11 1/2 minutes.Amazing sound.A calm 13 minutes in.It's
sinister sounding 16 minutes in.The tempo picks up again to end it.
"Traccia" opens with some incredible piano as drums join in then vocal
melodies.A fuller and faster melody 1 1/2 minutes in.
The Nocenzi brothers on the dual keyboards are the stars of this
album."Metamorfosi" is my favourite track. Way to go John! |

Indeed MU has a special place in my heart.
Rustichelli and Bordini's Opera Prima is also a terrific album.
Opera Prima by I Pooh is also interesting but this is another story...
There are good news from the Italian Prog Chronicle:
Nuova Era has been reformed by keyboardist Walter Pini within two ex Taproban David Guidoni and Guglielmo Mariotti on drums and bass.
The band has recorded the track "Lasciate ogni speranza o voi che entrate". for a new compilation by Musea records dedicated to Dante's Inferno. Special guest Alessandro Papotto, famous sax player of Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and founder of the interesting band Periferia del Mondo.
You can listen to the track from the Nuova Era myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=158911637 |

Hello fellow Italian progheads, here's a bit overlooked new Italian progrock band:
AINUR — Children of Hurin Ciao Review by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom) Special Collaborator New Progrock Bands Specialist
This is a CD/DVD box set that contains a wonderful 32 page booklet in which you can read how about this Tolkien inspired dark concept story (taken from the book Silmarillion). The music is performed by musicians who use a wide range of instruments, from harp, violin, French horn, clarinet and flute to keyboards and many male and female singers like a bass bariton. The amount of classical instruments is a strong indication what we can expect from Ainur during the 13 songs on Children Of Hurin. CD: The first composition Morgoth’s Prophecy is an impressive start, we can enjoy lots of dynamics between the classical instruments and the electric guitar and sensational Minimoog synthesizer flights, layered with classically trained vocals. The other 11 songs also deliver a blend of classic and progrock music with the emphasis a bit more on classical. But just when it tends too sound a bit too classical, the music turns into fluent, often sumptuous progrock like sparkling piano, porpulsive guitar and lush organ in Mim And The Outlaws, sweeping guitar riffs and fat Minimoog runs in The Sack Of Nargothrond and beautiful interplay between electric guitar and the Minimoog with a progmetal sounding rhythm-section in Glaurung’s Death, Ainur succeeds to keep my attention during the entire album! The sound on Children Of Hurin is in the vein of their debut CD entitled From Ancient Times (2007), I tend to prefer their second effort and I am very curious to the development of this promising new Italian progrock band. DVD: The main footage is the Original Ainur Live Video featuring two songs from the Children Of Hurin CD, we can witness that Ainur is very capable to perform their story on stage, also in the track War Of Wrath (on the From Ancient Times album) that contains heavy guitarwork, pleasant keyboardwork by two members along violins and a bariton, great tension between two musical styles. Finally two live songs from earlier concerts in this section. The other extra’s are Interview, Recording Sessions, Ainur History Documentary, Ainu Live Documentary and Extra Video. A big hand for the unknown new Italian progrock band Ainur, they deserve a bit more attention on this site! My rating: a very solid 3,5 stars, next album 4 stars? |

soon as as I add Cocciante I can't wait to hear that story If it's fit to be told in a reivew hahahha I love that album as well. I will be reviewing Opera Prima when I get back... have a whole slate of reviews to uncork upon the forum. Including this gem of an album I somehow missed.... any of you got Battiato's La Convenzione. The man never fails to amaze me. Will be adding Juri Camisasca when I return as well..... finally have had a chance to hear his work with Battiato. Could have added him earlier based on print resourses...but did want to hear the material first. |

I think that Opera Prima is the Japanese mini, it was on sale; they also have the Italian version which is probably better...I'd meant to ask somebody about that...

you made the right choice... the Japanese mini is the ONLY version to get of that album. The Italian edition's suck.... the moog bass parts are inaudible.. a disaster of a remaster.
hahhaha.. I like that...have to remember that one for a review by-line. |

Same here with the reviews...I tend to require weeks of therapy after each one before I can do another one to get my self-esteem back up. I'm surprised to hear that about the Italian version of Opera Prima; usually those versions are pretty good, especially the packaging...guess I'll have to consult the experts more often on these.

I saw that Mandy.... thanks... got some new additions coming down the pike next week.. keep your eyes open. Love your reviews. When I get back home I plan on hitting reviewing harder and working more on promoting. Starting with the Pooh... don't have many.. but what I have ...I want to review. Interesting group.... plus I think I got a good haul of albums this trip. RPI and my rapidly expanding German collection... found a bunch on sale at the Ricordi shop on the Via Corso.

Well... It will be that I am happy to have resolved the health problem more serious... It will be the atmosphere that I have around... Although lacking the girlfriend...(!) But I must tell you that I am really pleased the inclusion of I Pooh!
Also because I am rediscovering the origins of Prog... All things considered I'm discovering that a group Beat like I Corvi (The Ravens) produced Proto... Ehm ... Proto Proto Prog(!).
And all this is pushing me into a new dimension! |
