You did give VDGG 1 star didn't you. I wouldn't go that far, but so far they have been mostly a 2-star band for me. I still expect that they will click for me someday, but as of yet it hasn't happened. |
Yes, that is one of my least favorite VDGG albums and I still stand by everything I said in the review. They simply don't do it for me. Most of their albums would warrant 1 or 2 stars from me. Godbluff is the one I remember liking the most.

I am going to still keep all of my VDGG albums and it's not like I absolutely hate them either; I just expressed how I respond to the albums in my review. With all the other music out there I love, they simply pale in comparison by quite a large margin.
Nonetheless, they're better than most crap out there. They're just not really my type of music.

Henry Cow's Leg End was a good album. I haven't heard the rest of their output yet, so no opinions yet on that. I did purchase an Art Bears album recently, and thought it was decent musically, but I didn't really care for the singing too much.
I know that another favorite of yours is Opeth, and I like them quite a bit musically, but I just don't like the death metal vocals. Never have, and possibly never will. They're just not my thing.
I've only heard the 1 Magma album and again musically it was quite good. I just wasn't interested in the made up language and the chants. I love Star Trek but I have no interest in learning or speaking Klingon either.
There is still hope for me for the above 3 bands that you have moved towards lately. On the other hand, Meshuggah is probably a lost cause to these ears. And I didn't really care for the singing on what I have heard from Koenji either, so there might not be much hope for me there either.

Henry Cow's albums are all Henry Cow, but I've found that different people may actually respond radically to different albums. A friend of mine nearly hated Leg End but quite liked IPOL, for example, which I found interesting.
I know that another favorite of yours is Opeth, and I like them quite a bit musically, but I just don't like the death metal vocals. Never have, and possibly never will. They're just not my thing.
Actually, I prefer Meshuggah and Dream Theater to Opeth and only really like 4 of Opeth's albums. Those albums are quite good though, but Opeth might not crack my top 30 bands. They might be close. I understand your viewpoint there.
I've only heard the 1 Magma album and again musically it was quite good. I just wasn't interested in the made up language and the chants. I love Star Trek but I have no interest in learning or speaking Klingon either.
Actually... that happened with me. I had heard a Magma album way back when, and it didn't catch me much. I hated the singing. I waited, gave it 6 months, and tried it again with a different album (the debut this time instead of MDK) and I liked it alot more. That opened the doors for me liking MDK and the rest is history.

Those are both acquired tastes, and I can't see you getting into Meshuggah at all. Koenji maybe, but there again I'm not so sure.

I'll probably ask for the Snakes and Arrows Live DVD, not that I need another Rush DVD, but as a fanboy I must have.

Hehe! I think maybe you have to be fascinated with the lingo etc. to 'get' Magma... that's probably one of the main things that made me curious about them (I'm a keen maker-upper of words myself, you see... and I even have my own songs written in created languages!!! ). And personally, I like how non-Klingony Kobaļan is: there is no dictionary, no idiots compiling lexicographies and rules of grammar... it's for singing, not speaking; feeling, not understanding. [*is stupidly obsessed* ] On which note: hi Logan!!! Also: Volapük! That band I really need to hear. They are named after... a created language! PS James, I'll PM you tomorrow morning if that's ok, I need to look some things up first.

That'd be awesome. I don't want to get the S&A DVD though because I want to have my memories be the only thing I remember from those 2 years (particularly this year)... UNLESS somehow I found a CD or DVD form of the exact concert I was at. Then that would be amazing.

One day you will be old like me and you will need the DVDs to help with remembering those memories.

I'm strange in my ways. I tend to be a song-oriented or a lyric-oriented listener. But it is not as though I can understand much of what I listen to without a lyric sheet in front of me anyways, but I like the option of being able to do that.
That's one reason I have never really been all that interested in non-English singing bands or all instrumental bands.
It is kind of funny though, because generally I'm not really paying that close of attention to the lyrics, so there is really no reason for me to be that way.

In contrast, I'm much more musically-oriented than lyric/singer-oriented. Ozric Tentacles are one of my favorite bands ever and I am such a huge fanboy, and they don't have a single second of any vocals. However, in the case of Rush where the lyrics do add to my nostalgia and enjoyment otherwise, they can be significant.

I think that most prog fans are more musically-oriented. I think that I am just a pop fan stuck in a prog fan's brain; or would that be a prog fan stuck in a pop fan's brain?

That could be. The former, maybe? Or the latter? God, I don't know.

Interesting! Generally, I'm pretty lyric-focused (words are my thing, lyric-writing particularly... rubbish lyrics are a HUGE turn off...), but one thing that is good if the words are in a language you don't know is that you can't tell whether they're good or bad. I guess that might be annoying in itself ("What the hell am I singing along to?! Is this dreadfully banal and hackneyed, or the soul of wit?! Dammit, I HAVE TO KNOW!!!" ), but in a way it's nice to let go of judging the lyrics and just enjoy the sounds. I've been appreciating that a lot in the Italian stuff I've been trying - they could be reciting from the phone book for all I know, but it sounds really gorgeous! The clever bit with dear ol' Magma is how some of the words and phrases have known definitions but most don't - they try and hook you in with those teasing morsels of meaning and then you are left conjecturing and theorising as to what it all means (really... people actually do this...!). That definitely would not appeal if you're (a) not necessarily focusing on the words and (b) ideally not having to focus on the words much anyway 'cos they're in English!
