For me, it's personal. I was 14 when I went to my first gig, which was Genesis with Peter Gabriel on vocals. It changed my life permanently. So for me it has to be Return of the Giant Hogweed. I saw Steve Hackett perform it recently, and it still brings me out in goosebumps. Looking back over the adventures/misadventures I've had throughout the decades since, I don't know whether to curse Peter Gabriel or bless him!!!

The Gates of Delirium - Yes
Karn Evil 9 - ELP Supper's Ready - Genesis
the 3 songs that instantly come to my mind when someone says "prog".

I would add "Close to the Edge" to that list and maybe also "Thick as a Brick" but those are all good examples.

I thought since the original poster didn't really specify a certain number, I'd stick with my most obvious 3 choices. I definitely would have added Close to the Edge and A Passion Play to that list. I'm one of those guys who likes APP more than TaaB, and it really is a tad proggier than Brick so

I discovered Banco’s “Darwin!” in 1983, and the opening track L’Evoluzione just bowled me over. This is IT, THIS is what prog is all about! was my immediate reaction.
