Genesis bought a Mellotron (King Crimsons) because they loved the sound from In the Court
I would call it clear influence

Id call it likeing an album, prior to their symphonic period, in a style not that far from what they are doing, influence

We thought they might be too late — we’d been there and done it. We saw them along the lines of ‘Genesis are quite fun, but they’ve got a guitarist who sits down like Robert Fripp and a drummer who plays a bit like Bill.

I think it's a battle between GENESIS and KING CRIMSON so far for most influential prog band. My vote would go to Genesis In a heart beat because I'm such a huge fan of Neo prog and I love how they started it all with album TRICK OF THE TAIL. Still to this day one of the greatest prog albums of all time.

Genesis? Never. I like the band a lot, but influential? Only on bands who have little to contribute themselves. Crimson only had one relevant album, but that was enough to set the genre on its way.

It's so hard to say, so many different bands have influenced so many different bands then influencing more bands...
My clumsy point being as prog is an ever growing and evolving organism it's impossible to say where the influence starts and when it ends, as neither truly exist

There's some truth in that, but if any band could be said to be the crucial influence, it would be 1-2-3, yet because they never recorded till later, they remain relatively obscure in many people's minds.

yep, 1-2-3 was a definitive moment - but hold on, that was the 60s, this post is supposed to begin from the 70s.

Are we talking here what band influenced me, which makes it all personal to me and you and you and you!
Or are you asking what band influenced other bands, which leaves us with just a few fore runners to choose from?

Which bands influenced other bands, which is why I said 1-2-3 rather than what prog became because of that.

The Nice probably had some influence on the early Canterbury scene. Along with the Moody Blues.

When we think about the word, influential I think we have to think about what bands helped shape other great bands. Pink Floyd certainly paved the way for a lot of truly wonderful prog bands. Dream Theater is no exception.

I kind of hate to simplify it this way but the truth is that the most influential bands tend to be the ones who are the most well known.
So I'll just list a few randomly:
The Nice/ ELP (Emerson is probably more influential as a keyboard player than either of his respective bands)
King Crimson
Yes
Genesis (for their prog era 70-77 of course)
Gentle Giant
Van der Graaf Generator
Magma
Camel
Rush
Marillion
IQ
Flower Kings
Porcupine Tree
As for newer bands there really are hardly any that I would say are influential. MOst newer bands starting these days are still mostly influenced by the classic prog of the seventies.

Ok, a few I left off the first time:
Moody BLues (although they never really developed into a true prog band imo they were nonetheless very influential to prog bands)
The Beatles -see above
Pink Floyd
Soft Machine
Caravan
Dream Theater (maybe not the first prog metal band but probably the most influential)
There's probably a few more(mostly from the seventies ofcourse).
Sorry to burst anyones bubble but prog has never been as big as it was back then and so newer bands who discover prog are discovering the old prog first(not counting heavy metal or prog metal or anything postie or metally. :) )
