I always miss giving credit to Mr. Schenker. You're right. He always seems to be missed on the guitar polls. Thanks for reminding me!
I have a couple of Uli Jon Roth CDs that I turn to for some inspiration and another guitarist that makes me smile is Mattias IA Eklundh. His CD "Freak Guitar The Road Less Traveled" is on Steve Vai's label 'Favored Nations" and has some impressive stuff. I need to pick up some Buckethead, as I haven't really experienced anything from him.
If I am in composing mode, I usually don't listen to anything because I want to keep my head clear from trying to borrow from anyone. Usually when I hit one of those ruts where nothing comes out, I wil pop in a disc that someone has recommended or something that I enjoy listening to over and over. Recently, I have enjoyed Vinnie Moore's collection on the Shrapnel label, Joe Stump, Uli Jon, and of course, some Yngwie and Ritchie. I also enjoy some Hess, a great band from Chicago that I found on Guitar Nine.
Glad to hear everyone is getting fed in one way or another!

Yeah, when I'm composing I'm not listening to music..but right after finishing a song I'll listen to some stuff, and see how it compares..just to see if I'm getting any better when it comes to my writing.

^NO, I HOPE THE SHOW GETS CANCELLED AND HE DOES A PRIVATE SHOW IN MY HOUSE.
Srsly though, so far my sweep picking is 10 times better than it was at the start of the shred war, plus my alternate picking is just cleaner and more confident sounding now, so all is pretty good |

Ah! I might be seeing Satriani for my dad's birthday too . Also I'm seeing BTBAM again this time opening for Children of Bodom.
Yeah my sweeping as gotten better all around..and my alternate picking needs a little more work..I really just need to learn more theory to make my playing all around better, it will help out my songwriting and solowriting so much more too

BtBaM again, lucky bugger!
I'm not much of CoB fan at all, their guitarist Alexi Laiho has always seemed a bit up himself, especially in that interview where he completely sl*gged off Dream Theater and John Petrucci I'm performing at school next week, Soothsayer with improvised solo, Welcome to Bucketheadland and probably The Trooper again, but I'll spice up the solo with some fancy alternate picked lines. |

Please 'scuse my ignorance, as it's obvious, I've been under a rock for sometime. The ONLY thing I know about Children of Boden is from seeing an ad in a guitar magazine. My drummer had a clinic with DT's drummer Mike Portnoy and yes, I have heard Mr. Petrucci, but not a lot. So, call me slow and not up to date. Perhaps my age happens to be a wall (over 40). I heard Jimi Hendrix at 5 years old and that blew my mind. I heard Deep Purple, then Rainbow and all the heavy bands of the 70's. I studied classical guitar for 5 years and heard Van Halen, then this Swedish wiz kid. So, my tastes tend to run that direction. Rush was a big influence (I REALLY like "Caress Of Steel" and "Hemispheres", but that is for another thread.) as was....ok...I admit....some of the 80's shlock bands. But, I am open to suggestions for listening and then I can draw my own conclusions.
So, if I am looking for inspiration and to generally feel good, I tend to lean towards Yngwie, Ritchie, Uli, Joe Stump, Satriani, Al Di, Jimi, and some Wes Montgomery. For fingerstyle, I like Alex Di Grassi. Classical is Julian Bream, Segovia and Alex Masi's renditions of Mozart. Classical music is VERY inspiring, so by using those footholds and my studies and library of books, I get fed pretty good.
So, perhaps some new listening is in store........

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexi_Laiho Read, and you shall find what I'm talking about. In other news, I'm getting ever closer to the solo from Selkies: The Endless Obsession, plus I've noticed my 3 string sweeps just work now, just completely easy and natural now, which wasn't the case a few months ago. |

Not as of yet, but I should get around to that later this week
Been playing 3-5 hours a day lately, which is what we all should be aiming for. |

Shredders... those b*****ds!
Man, is that 6 hours per day thing serious? I can´t practice techniques for more that 20 min... But then again I don´t consider myself that good of a guitarist, I think of myself of a composer... I´ll leave the shredding to people with patience |

^Hehe.
In a good practice session, a good shredder will run through not only shredding technique, but bending, vibrato and various other expression techniques, plus theory, jamming with chord progressions, learning songs etc, not just 5 hours of shredding you know |

The heaviest Gibson pick. But in warm weather I could feel it flexing, so I made one out of stainless steel plate (around 1mm). Had to be smoothed and highly polished. There is absolutely no flex, but it gives a different sound - less bass and more treble. Not so good for the finish of the guitar.......but at least I can say It's a true Heavy Metal pick ! Well, for the updates, I've finally figured out all the arpeggio shapes for the Selkies: The Endless Obsession solo, and it's a little cleaner too, although the last arpeggio is still pretty hard.

Hey, what happened to examples of all this shredding practice ? Nothing too serious, just improvisation would be nice.
