I agree. From the albums of 2006 that I've heard Laura - Radio Swan Is Down and The Ascent of Everest - How Lonely Sits The City are my favorites of the genre. Edited by chamberry - December 11 2006 at 19:11 |

I'm listening to Do Make Say Think in concert right now! Amazing show, I've been listening to this a lot lately. Great sound quality, performances, atmosphere... everything. Those guys can really play. |

Freak, what live bootleg would you recommend I would get?
Avestin: I personally enjoy this album alot. It sure isn't a 5 star album, but still is a nice album to listen to. I need to check out more 2006 releases... I found more streamable MP3s. Here's one of the famous "Laura - Radio Swan Is Down". I hope and here's two I definetly have to check out: "The Workouts - Flyover" Boxing Day "Hammock - Raising your voice... trying to stop an echo" Raising your voice... trying to stop an echo Check out the vocals on both songs! They sound pretty good. Edited by chamberry - December 11 2006 at 21:59 |

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Yeah. That song was the one that caught my attention of the band, but saddly is one of it's kind. The other songs from the album are pretty in the same level of goodness with some exceptions.
P.S. Check out the third song I added into the post. All 3 are with vocals BTW. Edited by chamberry - December 11 2006 at 22:03 |

yea, I really liked the vocals on that second tune. But as for that new one you threw up there, I think that was the first time I have ever truly disliked a post-rock song I heard.
I'm not sure why, it just didn't do anything for me. maybe it was a little to "pop"... Idono

I think it was a good idea for you to dislike that song (although that wasn't my idea of course).
The more you get to know the genre you'll find a lot of copy cats that will surely dissapoint you. It's all part of the game. |

Yea... I knew it couldn't all be perfect. But that one really just didn't float my boat.
But look at this thing I wrote in the "Appreciation and Discusion of Post-Rock" thread on the DT boards.
"One person I was talking to about Post-rock, and I belive GY!BE in particular, used the adjective Eloquent to describe it. I feel he hit the nail right on the head. PR (great PR anyway) has such a beautiful restraint of itself. It's sole purpose is the mood it creats, and while there are over 1,000 oppurtunities to do really kick ass stuff, great lines, crazy harmonies, beautiful rhythm changes and meter changes, they understand that it would only kill the mood. They understand that this music needs to live on its own, with very little help from its creators. The music takes on living characteristics, and chooses for itself when it need to change or die, or grow, or shrink. And to be able to interpret those needs and wants of the music so perfectly, is teh eloquence that PR musicians have.
" What are your thoughts on that. I think its a pretty interesting look at it.

Great words, BPT, and a nice description of them as well. I agree completely with what you've just wrote specially on "The music takes on living characteristics, and chooses for itself when it need to change or die, or grow, or shrink." That's how I see it. Eloquent is perfect adjetive for them.
Personally my vocabulary isn't as large as I want it to be in english nor in my native tounge, spanish, and when people ask me what do they sound like I would simply reply "listen to them and you'll see", but at least now I have word to a company their description. |

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum! I've got so much vocabulary being rammed into my brain (high school English) that I shouldn't have a problem describing these bands, but I do. I often just say that post-rock is extremely emotional and cinematic music. I wish I could describe it better, but I struggle to pick out words that work best.
As a side note, I'm in my fourth year of Spanish, and I'm trying to increase my vocab and grammar there (one of my favorite mistakes made in Spanish was assuming that embarassed translated into 'embarazado' and giving the teacher a chuckle). Somehow I failed to notice you were from Puerto Rico, Chamberry! Your English is a lot better than several folks that I know.
As a reply to what concert bootleg to download:

Thanks Freak. As wierd as it may sound, I learned to speak english thanks to The Loony Tunes. Since I was a kid I always enjoyed watching them and I always tried to copy what they where saying. I guess that helped a lot and then when I started school english class was always my favorite class.
Cable TV, I salute you. EDIT: I'll check those bootlegs out. Thanks for the info. Edited by chamberry - December 12 2006 at 20:01 |

haha, thats a great story ( the looney toons.)
Something I recently realized was that a lot fo Sigur ros isn't in Icelandic. Its kinda the equivilent of him scating of sings lalaladoodoodeedah...
I think thats unbelievbly amazing. It makes the vocals truley act like an instrument, and (even though for me I can't understand the words anyway) to have lyricless music is great, because you can pay attention to jsut the music and not be bothered by the words you're hearing. but the down fall to that is that vocals are sooo great, so their solution makes it perfect.

it's his made up language, "Hopelandic", which isn't an actual word for word language (like Kobaian) but is just a series of noises like "oooh aaah laa" and such you said.....either way, Sigur Ros is brilliant |

Ah! Hopelandic. I love that name. It fits so well with the image I have of their Takk... album.
Are there any news of them recording a new album? On a side note: Great news everyone! I just found out that Godspeed You! Never thought I'd be able to see Godspeed besides their blurred pictures in the liner notes and faraway concert pics. Amazing!

^^^ Those were my thoughts. I would never imagine myself seing them besides their pictures. It's like a (sort of) dream come true.
I really have no idea if they're planing to reunite or not. There are always rumors, but none of them turn out to be true. |

I should really keep a little more up to date with this thread. Yes Laura - Radio Swan Is Down is a great album. I'm actually going to see them on Saturday night (set me back all but a few dollars). They a playing near my place, so looking forward to this. Also I'm planning to see them again on the 29th Dec, they are playing with Pivot, which is another great Australian post-rock band. |
