Yeah, Kronos Quartet are great.  I especially love their interpretation of John Zorn's "forbidden fruit" off of Spillane (Zorn); Winter Was Hard (Kronos Quartet). 

I am finding the Arditti String Quartet to be quite pleasing as well... they seem to play the really challenging modern/20th century material...

I heartily agree re: Arditti, really nice selection of compositions they've covered. And Kronos Quartet has my undying respect for tackling Feldman's String Quartet (II) live when the piece was for shown. 6 hours worth of playing, that's stamina! He longer piece's are hard enough at the best of times, yet alone stretch to the end of its tether.

David, you're definitely not alone in your opinions (as has already been shown), my lapse in posting here is a result of my disenchantment with the current state of things (time is an issue too). I think some of the problem spans from terminology. anything with a smidgen of dissonance or an overt display of weirdness, will get lumped under the banner. My thoughts are not clear at the moment so I'll not elucidate further.

Oh! I didn't catch this one. I bought The Bowls Project as soon as it came out. It's probably my third favorite album released so far this year, just really fun/great music.

I was also surprised when I heard Nils Frykdahl voice on one of the songs (forgot its name, but his voice is unmistakable).

It really is head -and-shoulders better than anything they've done. Nils also used to be a member of the band and the song you're thinking of is Demon Lover. It's such a wonderful album. Charming Hostess actually has a residency not too far from where I live at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. I just have not had the time to go unfortunately.
