They require too much explanation.  It might suck the fun out of it for you.

That's kind of my approach for all my music.  When it comes to music listening, I lead a pretty solitary life.  I don't really know anyone IRL who shares my tastes.  Johnny from Rare Goat comes close with our punk background, but even then he's into different punk bands than I am.

My dad and I are both into ambient music and some prog, and a friend of mine who just moved away has a pretty well rounded musical outlook such that there's very little she doesn't like.  And then my wife shares my fondness for "alternative 80s" music, so there's that (not to mention we originally "hit it off" when she told me about a Black Flag concert she once went to).  And of course it's hard to go wrong with the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, and the Who in any kind of mixed company, and I like all of them.  I guess I was thinking more about my more fringey tastes.

Just in case anyone needed more elaboration.  I'm just blabbing here.

I'm the same way, but my friends are starting to get on my case about never sharing my music.  I always just let other people play their own music in the car and stuff.  It's too much work and stress to put each song through a 'how does this sound to normal people' filter. Ouch  Often times they end up just sitting there nervously as the song goes into a really weird part that I forgot about.

Just tell them it's because they usually react negatively when you do.  What's the point in playing something that 3/4 of the car is going to hate?

I like to slip something like Formaldehyde (the song, not the chemical ) in after 2 or 3 dance songs.

But then again, I also like dance music.

Anyways - haters gonna hate!

I had a couple of college roommates that liked some prog:  Floyd, Yes, Rush, Dream Theater was about it.

I got one relatively new friend into Porcupine Tree.

And that's about the extent of my IRL music discussions in the past 20-25 years.  Ouch

Yeah, exactly.  You end up being responsible for their enjoyment (or lack of enjoyment) of the music, and that's more trouble than it's worth most of the time.  I used to try to turn people on to my stuff, but not so much any more.   On music sites like this, it's much more appropriate, because we're all here for the music (and for Vomps of course), so it's not as awkward recommending stuff here.  But in real life, most people don't really give a lot of thought to music, and if you give them something that really challenges their existing values, it often doesn't go over well at all.

I don't even try to get IRL friends into Rare Goat's stuff.  I figure as long as they know it exists, they can listen to it if they want to.  Maybe that's why we're not famous yet.  I've always taken a soft-sell approach.
